What: Anatomy of a Classic: The Pump

Why: The pump as we know it dates back to 1533 when Catherine de Médicis married the Duc d’Orléans in Paris and wore heels. These days we associate the word “pump” with a shorter heel and simply use the term “high heels” or “stilettos” for those knock-out shoes we hate to love. The Style.com history of the pump refers to our beloved stilettos as “sex pumps,” explaining that this particular design dates back to the early 1950s.
