What: Bags of Goodwill, auctioned off by twentytwentyone at the London Design Festival
Why: Following the unexpected and unprecedented success of Anya Hindmarch’s “I’m Not a Plastic Bag,” UK designers are tapping into the awareness-raising tote trend. Forty noted London designers submitted their one-of-a-kind canvas totes for auction at September’s London Design Festival and ended up raising more than $12,200 for the Fairtrade Foundation, which encourages good deals for agricultural producers in the developing world.
Like Hindmarch’s bag, which is taking the world by storm, the Bags of Goodwill project is aimed at preserving our environment by promoting the reuse of canvas shoppers instead of multiple, wasteful plastic bags.
Eco-chic fashionistas are holding tight to their Bags of Goodwill — none of the one-offs are available on e-bay yet — but you can drool over all the designs at twentytwentyone.
You can also pick up one of these canvas shoppers available to the masses. They’re not one-of-a-kind, but they’re still eco-chic. And it’s all about the cause anyway, right?
