Fashion Find: Handmade Hats from Pinkham Millinery

imageWhat: The adorable Flapper Cloche from Pinkham Millinery.

Why: A few years ago, when I was working in South Africa, I went to my first fancy-pants horse race. Everyone at the race was dressed beautifully, all with stunning hats. My bare head and so-so dress made me vow that I’d never go sans-hat again.

I could have spared myself the trouble by checking out the designs of Dayna Pinkham, a European-style milliner based in Portland, Ore. Millinery — the craft of designing, developing and/or selling hats for women — is a craft that requires years of practice.

With more than 20 years of experience under her, er, hat, Pinkham has developed a wide range of styles to suit every personality. We’re especially fans of this sleek and stylish flapper cloche. Although it’s not appropriate for my impending triumphant return to the track, it is a practical choice for all those bad hair days I seem to have, helping to add zest to any outfit…even a so-so dress.

Price: $510
