While window shopping along 5th Avenue this week, wallet buried as far from my grasp as possible, I ogled the racks and kept a constant mantra in my head: "Wait." This is just the tip of the Fall '07 iceberg and rushing into splurge purchases with no purpose will leave me with a crowded closet and still…nothing to wear. But what's a girl to do when she just HAS to shop? Here are what make up the staples of my fall wardobe every year. They're purchases that can't go wrong.
A Cashmere Sweater: You should always have at least one. They transcend seasons, are the most comfortable, coziest thing to wear on a chilly day and they always add a luxurious air to whatever you wear, even if it's just jeans. My pick is this Merino Silk Cashmere Long Sleeve Turtleneck from Brooks Brothers. The turtleneck is simple and elegant, and at $118, you couldn't ask for a better price.
A Quality Pair of Tall Boots: Whether you go for black or brown, this is one thing you always need in your wardrobe. The most important thing is to not skimp on comfort or quality. Ecco makes fantastically comfortable styles that are also chic and classy. The Bremen Boot ($199 @ OnlineShoes.com) is streamlined, cushioned and with a low 1 3/4-inch heel, incredible easy to wear.
A Unique Blazer: There's no shortage of compliments when you show up wearing a tailored blazer with a vintage feel. Really push the ticket on menswear with something like this Sutton Studio Exclusive Double Breasted Jacket ($200 @ Bloomingdales) or go subtle and sophisticated with a velvet blazer, such as this Laundry by Shelli Segal Velour Evening Blazer
($89 @ Smart Bargains).

A Great-Fitting Sheath Dress: Wear it to work, wear it on warm days, wear it on cold days. Add and subtract to suit the occasion. It's versatile, classic, feminine and beautiful. My two favorites are this Crepe sheath dress from Talbots ($158), which is good for balancing heavy hips or broad shoulders, and this Jones New York Collection Matte Sateen Dress ($129 @ Nordstrom) in a flattering A-line, perfect for most body types.
