Heels Are Hot, But Are They Giving You UTIs?

High HeelWe all suffer for beauty (at least those of us with a case of DFS), but aside from back pain, blisters , achy knees and more unsightly ills caused by beauty and fashion, now there are rumors that high heels can cause UTIs.

Sound ridiculous? Well, actually, the docs have a point. The nature of high heels is not only to make your legs appear longer, but also to tilt the torso forward, giving you a higher looking rear and a sexier saunter. While you look great, internally, your hips and spine shift out of alignment putting pressure on the nerves of the lower back. This can cause a condition known as "lordosis,” which aside from being painful, also constricts your ability to urinate, thus leading to more urinary tract infections.

Aside from wearing flats or lower heels (check out our guide to Comfort Shoes for more on that topic), medical professionals remind us to drink plenty of water, plus drink cranberry juice and take extra vitamin C, which combat bacteria that can lead to a UTI.

Lordosis is a normal part of the lumbar spines biomechanical set up. Everyone has lumbar lordosis, did you mean to say “excessive amounts of lordosis” caused by the increase in anterior pelvic tilt as a result of wearing high heels?
