Swimsuit shopping is by far the most dreaded occasion of all. No matter how skinny the mirror, how soft the fluorescents or how hot the style, sometimes it just seems impossible to find something that doesn’t make you feel like a beached whale. With these tips you can get the most out of your swimsuit shopping experience with less dread, more fun and a better outlook overall.

Relax: Take a day to shop when you feel calm and self-confident. Save lunch until after the fitting, and remember to be patient, as finding the right suit takes time.

You Are Your Worst Enemy: Find your confidant shopper pal to help you weed through a variety of suit styles. Instead of agonizing over every little flaw, she can honestly point out which cuts look best on you.

Know the Facts: As a general rule, swimsuits run small, so go up a size when testing. You’ll know it’s the right fit when the swimsuit holds you in without wrinkling (a sign it’s too big) or creating a bulge around the seams (we like to call this the sausage effect).

Consider Color: Don’t be afraid to try out colors that you disregard at first glance. That yellow might just look fabulous on you. Also, when in doubt, choose matte materials over shiny ones. They are less likely to highlight flaws and they naturally create a slimmer looking silhouette.
