Celebs appeared to take the locale of this year's MTV Video Music Awards quite literally as they strolled the red carpet and graced the stage in shiny fabrics, flashy embellishments and metallics galore. The lights on the strip were no match for the star power at The Palms in Las Vegas Sunday night where of-the-moment trends were on full display. Here, we recap a few of our fashion highlights and give a little guidance for incorpoarting the daring duds into your own wardrobe:
Sequins
VMA-style: We have to give it to Lauren Conrad (aka LC), Jennifer Garner and Christina Aguilera (va-va-va-voom!) who were our top three faves in this style. LC and Mrs. Affleck opted for shorter numbers, while Christina donned a form-fitting, floor-length bedazzler.
Your style: Don't be alarmed — we're not directing you toward Studio 54 sequins. Instead, try a more subtle, subdued approach, like limiting the sparklers to a hemline or a collar.
Gold
VMA-style: Surprise, surprise, metallic dresses were another hit of the night. We could barely keep count of the champagne-colored frocks we saw — Beyonce, Mandy Moore, Kelly Clarkson, Vanessa Minillo, Whitney from The Hills — the list goes on.
Your style: It's okay if you're not ready to invest in a full-on gold Grecian goddess dress a la Beyone — we're not either! But do spice up your closet with some metallic accessories. The gold buckle on Tory Burch's Reva flats is so hot now as is gold jewelry, like this cuff bracelet.
Satin Dresses
VMA-style: Who didn't have on a satin at the show? Everyone from Alicia Keys and Nelly Furtado in black satin to Paris Hilton in leopord seemed to be sporting the shimmering material.
Your style: This is a tricky one. You never want to run the risk of being too risque in this body-hugging fabric. Our suggestion? Keep it simple. Try a tuxedo pant with a single satin stripe down the leg or a sexy, yet sophistcated satin stiletto.
