Why: Form and a strong attention to detail have been an important presence in the work of Samantha López Uhthoff, a sculptor by trade. A natural curiosity for processes and materials, as well as a deep respect for the culture of her native Mexico, has led the artist towards a perpetual exploration of contemporary ideas while always remaining mindful of tradition and craft.
Although modern in their organic, sculptural forms and romantic in their fragility, the pieces created by Knotstudio also look to history for craftsmanship and technique. The designs often come from looking at ordinary things through a different lens. They reference not only the natural (microscopic view of wood cells, a drop of water dripping from a stalactite, a spider’s web) but also the man made (a detailed view of an old piece of machinery). The result then becomes something both original as well as familiar.
Each piece is hand knit out of Argentium Sterling Silver wire and then wrapped for strength making the pieces lightweight, yet surprisingly strong. The hand-dyed teal silk ribbon completes the piece.
