SheFinds Out About: Laser Hair Removal
As a woman, it’s hard to admit that you have unwanted facial hair. Many women wind up plucking, shaving, or performing other secret rituals to remove the unsightly fuzz. We here at SheFinds have had our issues with unwanted facial hair, so we set out to do something about it.
Enter Raechel Cunningham at New York Laser & Aesthetics (NYLA), one of the premier aestheticians practicing today. Raechel not only took us through the painless process but also offered some tips for those of you considering laser hair removal.
Do your homework: Only go to a licensed aesthetician who is certified to use the laser. Also make sure that the equipment that will be used on you is FDA-approved. Raechel uses (and recommends) the Yag 1064.
Preparation: Don’t wax two weeks before treatments, and don’t take antibiotics before you go in (they make you photo-sensitive). The night before you get the procedure done, shave the area you want worked on so no hair is above the surface.
The procedure: You’ll first be given light-blocking goggles, and then they will place cool gel over the area that they’ll be treating. Following a test zap to make sure that you're not experiencing discomfort, they get to work. At its most intense, the laser might feel similar to the snapping of a rubber band–but even that is pretty rare. To us, the biggest surprise is the smell of the burning hair, but you need not worry; that means the treatment is working. Five minutes later, you'll be cleaned off and set free.
The results: You should see approximately a 20% loss after the first session. After a total of six treatments, you shouldn't see anything at all. Although you'll need some upkeep (you’ll have to go in every six months to a year for maintenance), it's well worth the minimal hassle.
What can be removed: Any place that grows hair can be treated with laser hair removal. People come in for their bikini areas, underarms, legs, faces, around the areola of the breast…you name it, a laser can zap it.
Products recommended: Raechel adores the Eminence Organic Skin Care products and recommends these amazing natural products for everyone. She especially likes the Sweet Red Rose Cleanser, a hydrating, soothing mild cleanser for sensitive, normal or combination skin which cleanses and prevents signs of aging. Another indulgence is the Pear and Poppyseed Exfoliating Polisher, a natural exfoliant that smoothes uneven, dry complexions, minimizes fine lines and prevents breakouts. You can purchase the products via NYLA’s website.
If you’re ever in the New York area, we highly recommend that you schedule an appointment with Raechel and check out this amazing, life-changing treatment for yourself. We know that it’s definitely made a difference in our lives!
