Good Question: What Cosmetics Can I take on the Plane?

After last week’s terror scare — the airlines are prohibiting liquids, gels and lotions in carry-on luggage Lipsticks and laptops are once again allowed past the screeners, but still banned are tubes of mascara, lip gloss, perfume, shaving cream, liquid foundation, hair gel and toothpaste. Even massaging gel insoles are banned! Gel-enhanced bras are a no-no too, though we can’t figure out how they’re screening those. Get the list here.

The list of banned items can change almost daily, and security personnel have discretionary powers so don’t take anything that you aren’t prepared to toss.

Personally, I’m determined to avoid the slow revolving hell of the baggage carousel, so I’m packing these products in a see-through Ziploc for my weekend jaunt on Jet Blue.

UPDATE: As of September 2006, the TSA has significantly loosened restrictions on what you can take on board an aircraft. Still, especially when traveling internationally, officials are very picky. The 3-ounce rule still holds for all liquids, aerosols and gels, and you must be able to pack all of your carry-on toiletries in one quart-size clear, plastic bag.

Check out tsa.gov. It’s THE authority on what you can and can’t fly with.

You get ONE quart size clear plastic bag for ALL carry-on cosmetics and toiletries. Each of those items must be 3oz or less.

“Gel-filled bras may be worn through security screening and aboard aircraft.” So that means you can wear one, you can check one and you can bring one in your carry-on.

    Good luck and enjoy NYC!
