Stain Solution: How to Get Rid of Lipstick Stains

Lift Off #2Problem: Lipstick — bright red Chanel Rouge Allure — smeared on your white shirt, your hubby's collar, the inside of your purse, etc… Lipstick is especially tricky because it's oil based, meaning it needs an oil-based solvent to remove it, not a water-based one.

Step 1: Attack the stain STAT! If you let it set, chances are it's going to be a battle to get it out. And NEVER wash the stain before treating it, otherwise it will set and you will never get it out. Before using anything always check for colorfastness in an inconspicuous location.

Step 2: Check your care labels and make sure that the item isn't a dry clean, no bleach, hand wash only garment. Leather and suede need to go to a professional and if you are unsure of whether or not you might ruin something valuable or delicate, don't risk it. Take it to a pro, too.

Step 3: For a quick and easy solution, buy Motsenbocker's Lift Off #2, a stain remover highly regarded for removing oily stains. Or if you don't have any on hand, try one of these home remedies.

Blot off the lipstick (don't rub) with a towel moistened with plain rubbing alcohol. No alcohol around? Blot the lipstick with water to remove excess and then blot with ammonia and follow up by washing by hand with a gentle dish detergent. And if you're really pressed for luck, consider using hairspray. Spritz on enough to cover the stain and let it sit for 15 minutes. Wipe away the stain with a warm, moistened towel and finish up by hand washing with dish soap.
