Trend Alert: High-Waisted, Wide-Leg Pants

image
High-waisted, wide-leg pants are somehow creeping back into the fashion vernacular, popping up in everything from cropped pedal pushers to jeans to trousers. Thanks to stars like Mary Kate, who used the trend to get out of her little fashion rut, comfortable wide-leg pants are coming back in style and letting curvy girls rejoice. See how Ms. Olsen wears her manly slacks? Two thumbs up for nailing the style just right. Here’s how you can wear the trend:

1. The pants should be just long enough to graze the floor and let your toes peek out. Otherwise you look footless. Also, they shouldn’t be so wide that you swim in them, especially if you’re petite since it can make you look short and squat rather than long and lean.

2. Heels are a must. Wedges and other chunky heeled boots or pumps will juxtapose all that extra fabric and add length to the legs.

3. On top, opt for something fitted, like a waist-cinching dolman or nipped-waist, button-up blouse with short sleeves. Wide-leg trousers and a fitted blazericon look excellent at work.

4. When choosing denim, go for a dark navy wash, like the Grey Ant High Waisted Carpenter Jean or these 7 For All Mankind Ginger Wide Leg Jeans. Gray is also a hot color, as is white for summer.

Some inspiration to ponder:

I think high waisted trousers are fantastic! I just bought a pair today! They really suite my body shape (long and lean)

    LOVE IT!

Doubted until I tried them on; but I love them. I couldn’t wait so I bought 2 pair. One black and one denim. And comfort cannot be beat. Hope they stay for a long time.

I compleatly agree! they are so confortable!

Anyone know where high-waisted wide-leg pants or jeans can be found in mall-type stores? I reeeaaally want some!

  • Kristin

Do these look good on girls that are 5’4″ or do they make us look even shorter????

  • SheFindsKristin

I think that high-waisted wide-legged pants actually might be a great thing for petites as long as you’re wearing heels with them. The high-waist elongates your trunk while the wider leg makes you look tall and skinny. Just be sure to have the pants hemmed or tailored so the tip of your shoe shows through the front, angles toward your heel in the back and hangs in a straight line toward the floor.

    Happy Shopping!

All hail the high(er)-waisted straight leg jean. Finally, a style that I can wear that doesn’t leave a gap at my waist large enough to hold a small child, koala-bear style :) I have hips – not gigantic, but I had a baby, so there are hips. And, I have a long, relatively small waist and short legs. So, low rise jeans made me look like a garden gnome. NOT attractive at all…

Ah…back to the long and lean look! I loved those and gauchos, Though it is hard to find the high waist pants that will fit the skinny waist plus…. fit all the junk in the trunk.

Love it doen right! I bought a pair last night, ane I wanted to find out what to pair it with on top being petite but big busted. Thanks. I love seeing women rock risky trends, why play it safe?

I just bought a pair of wide leg jeans. They cost $150. I have to buy shoes and get them hemmed… My question is how long do you think they’ll be in style? I want to get my money’s worth.

Where can I find black high waisted wl trousers that zip in the back for 100 or less?

  • Sally

I, for one, am not happy about it. I have been in heaven for the past few years since the style and available cuts of trousers have actually fit my body type (thin, small hips, broad rib cage, small bust so straight up and down). Looks like I will have to go back to wearing men’s jeans if it keeps up.
