Trend Alert: Sexy Serpentine or Cold-Hearted Snake?

imageSnakes have been tempting us since the mythic Garden of Eden and long been identified with female sexuality. So, it’s no surprise that every few years snakeskin slithers its way back into fashion. This year is shaping up to be the year of the snake (both real and fake), with trendsetting celebs like Eva Longoria and Kylie Minogue showing some skin in the form of designer handbags and shoes from Prada and Chanel.

Animal rights groups, such as PETA, have condemned the use of snakeskin citing the torturous methods used to cultivate the precious skins, and even called for a ban on the use of snake and crocodile skin in fashion.

If carrying around a python or anaconda sounds appealing to you, score Eva’s beloved Prada Pitone Frame Bag ($2,620) at NeimanMarcus.com, or this Rafé New York 'Koh Samui Joy' Snakeskin Clutch ($395) at Nordstrom.com.

If you love the look, but can’t get the thought of tortured snakes out of your mind, opt for one of this season’s sexy faux snakeskin bags, like this Guess Saddle "Snakeskin" Handbag ($71) or this Style Violet Gray Snakeskin Clasp Clutch ($24) at Amazon.com. The prices are slightly more appealing as well.
