Trend Alert: Spring Layers

image

The NY Times (and everybody else) pushed for staying warm via layers this winter. Now that spring is here, layering is more important than ever what with snow one moment and 60°F and sunny the next. Piling on in the right way is a tricky business that takes skill to make curves look long and lean rather than bulky. So what’s the secret?

Layers should be airy and fluid, not too clingy. Pick a slim, elongated, featherweight knit top for the base, like this James Perse Long-Sleeve Twist-Waist Top or if you prefer, a basic white T-shirt or button-up blouse. Something tunic-length that can be scrunched and worn with a slim bottom, like these Robert Rodriguez Herringbone Skinny Pants, is best.

For the top layer, try a fitted vest, like this To The Max by BCBG Suede Vest from Overstock.com ($53)icon or another chunky piece that complements your pant color. Throw on a tailored jacket, like this Robert Rodriguez Cropped Riding Jacket to finish the look. The final touches are Sam Edelman Celine Flats from Shoes.com ($90) and a multi-strand necklace. You’ll be out the door and ready for the weather no matter what spring brings!
