What To Wear For New Year’s Eve: Washington, D.C.

Anyone who lives in D.C. knows we do things a little differently here. You won't see girls traipsing out in too-short mini skirts, unfortunate spandex, or inappropriate bling – no no. In the district, we ladies require a touch of polish. After all, you can't go from a pedicure to a political discussion without a fashionable – yet classic – wardrobe to get you there. News Year's is no exception: you're more likely to stumble into a debate over Hillary vs. Obama than an over-the-top fashion party.

That's why this strapless floral Milly dress from Neiman Marcus ($410) with a ruched bust is ideal. Black and white is a classic combination, while the mini cut and floral pattern gives it just the right dose of sex-appeal for the black-tie cocktail party where you'll likely ring in the New Year.

After you've spent $400+ on the perfect New Year's dress, you might think you don't have the budget to spring for the perfect pair of shoes to go with it. Guess again: these black patent-leather peep-toe Hollywould pumps from Target ($20.99)—complete with an adorable bow!—are the perfect compliment to your classy cocktail dress.

And don't forget, D.C. New Years-goers, a lady never forgets to wear tights. (Spanx Tight End Shaping Tights ($24) are always a good option.) And for make-up, M.A.C. Tinted Lipglass in Russian Red ($14) and Nail Lacquer in Shirelle ($10) strike the perfect, dramatic tone.

After all, you may be talking senators, but you shouldn't have to look like one.

Oh My Goodness, are you going to dress me up this year? I have never in my life had a party dress, or a pair of high heels for that matter. I would love to win this, that is if its a prize you are offering, if not, it was nice to look at. Thanks

Love the dress… though the price is a tad higher than I can afford with my ridiculous Georgetown rent. :) I’m excited to do New Years in DC this year — been living here for 8 years, but it’s the first year I’ll be celebrating down here. Looking forward to it!

On the whole, I love this blog, but oh, your post made me homesick for D.C. and Annapolis. Currently, I am living under a mound of snow in Indiana. I worked on the hill as a court reporter for years. It is interesting how the dress code varies in different ares of the country. Have a happy holiday.
