The Debate: When Luxury Goes Over the Top
According to WWD, Cartier has just upped the stakes on luxury by launching a pair of $130,000 jewel-encrusted sunglasses. I’ve heard of dishing out big bucks for designer bags, shoes and apparel, but $130,000 for sunglasses? This is ludicrous. It’s almost as insane as spending $42,000 on that hideous Louis Vuitton Tribute Patchwork bag. Maybe this is my frugal mentality, my modest income, or the fact that whenever I buy sunglasses I either lose or sit on them, but I can’t imagine ever spending that much on shades. I might go for these Marc Jacobs Metal Aviator Sunglasses ($90) or even these Oscar de la Renta Women’s Metal Sunglasses
($48), which both offer quality, haute label and classic styling, not to mention affordable price tags.
What do you say? How much is too much to spend on a pair of designer shades? Are high-end sunglasses even worth the big bucks? Post your comments below.

Way too much. I might spend, at best, $300-$400 on a pair of designer shades, but that’s my max. You could buy a house for this kind of money.
My mother swears by her $5 Wal-Mart sunglasses. I never spend more than $20 if I know I’m wearing them to the beach.
I have to say though — I really like some of the expensive sunglasses that have been showing up…but at the end of the day it’s pricey for plastic!
$130,000 for sunglasses?!? You have GOT to be KIDDING me!!! I lose, crush or otherwise destroy every pair I own so there’s no way I’m going to purchase (much less own and crush) the price equivalent of a Mercedes Maybach…
I’ll stick with my Audrey Hepburn shades I got on Canal Street for $10….
