Dove recently released a new video entitled “Onslaught” and it’s causing quite a bit of buzz. The short film depicts a young girl being bombarded by images of beauty and closes with the phrase, “Talk to your daughter before the beauty industry does.” If you haven’t seen it, you have to watch:
Okay, so now that you’ve seen it, what do you think? I think it’s awesome and I commend Dove for being brave enough to take a stand. I have to add that the brains behind this video – and the whole real beauty campaign — is a marketing genius (and probably filthy rich) for finally tapping into “real” women, but even still I think the video and the concept behind it are great. It’s powerful and effective and it gets an important message across without trivializing it.
I have to ask, though, do you think the beauty industry is completely to blame? Sure they put [insert beauty ideal here] models in their ads and commercials, but don’t we sort of condone it by continuing to buy their products? At what point is it our responsibility as consumers to let the industry know we’d like to see a more diverse representation of us as women?
To show our appreciation to Dove for challenging beauty norms, here are a few of our favorite products:

It’s not just the beauty industry. If we are obsessed with our clothes, looks, age, weight etc., our daughters will learn to do it too. Fashion, looking and feeling good is supposed to be fun, not life or death or a statement of ones worth. With role models who demonstrate healthy attitudes and balance, our girls won’t be as susceptible to media/advertising “onslaught.”
