Cash In On Your Clutter With Help From Online Classifieds

Last weekend, I finally sacked up and undertook the daunting task of the Seasonal Closet Switcheroo—all of my skimpy summer gear is now packed away, and the bulky sweaters, snow-friendly accessories and (ugh) long johns are back in rotation for the winter months. While I was Switcheroo-ing, I was pretty disgusted with how many unworn clothing items I own. What a waste. And with the economy in its current sad state and the holidays upon us, all this excess makes me feel even more guilty.

Enter online classified sites, double-whammy destinations that can help us de-clutter our closets and get a little extra cash by selling those items we most definitely can live without. Kijiji.com, a sort of cross between eBay and Craigslist, is a community classified site that lets us list the stuff we don't want anymore, in the hopes that someone else in the neighborhood will take it off our hands. A recent perusal of Chicago's Kijiji listings for clothing and fashion revealed great deals on a pair of UGG Cardy boots, never-worn Prada sunglasses, and a Kate Spade wallet.

Another site, Gazelle.com, acts as the middle man and gives you an up-front quote on all those electronic gadgets you don't need anymore. Whether you've upgraded your iPod or cell phone, or just haven't been able to figure out your digital camera, Gazelle guarantees a quote on every product you pitch. Gazelle will do all the work (and sometimes even pay for your shipping); all you have to do is decide what you can part with, and watch the cash roll in.
