Fashion Debate: You’re Too Old for a Mini Skirt!

image

Girl no. 1: "Once you hit a certain age you just shouldn't be allowed to wear stuff like that."

Girl no. 2: "Yeah, like, don't they have laws against that kind of thing? Indecent exposure or something?"

Girl no. 3: "They should. That woman is totally skeeving me out. Leave the mini-skirts to us young girls, Grandma!"

According to a recent UK survey (and some snot-nosed college girls who ripped apart a poor 30-something at a bar I was at), it's a crime to wear a mini skirt past the age of 28. That means Madonna, Cher, Salma Hayek (pre-preggers), Jennifer Garner, Eva Longoria and Halle Berry (she's 41!) just to name a few, shouldn't be allowed to wear minis, bikinis, tight jeans, tube tops or any other sort of "young people" clothes.

Uh, excuse me, but Halle is way hotter in her orange bikini than most 20-year-olds I've seen. And after all, isn't the real question not about how old you are, but whether or not you've got the body and demeanor to dress in such clothes? Take these two cases: Madge wore a purple Lyrca leotard and heels while dancing around a London stage at 40+ and looked fabulous. Amy Winehouse, tragically thin 24-year-old songstress, needs to put on some pants stat. I think the argument is pretty clear.

What do you think? When are you too old for a mini skirt? Is there a cut-off point for baring your bod in a bikini? Leave us a comment and let your voice be heard!

And if you're on my side, revel in the fact that you're hot and stylish — get yourself one of these sexy bikinis, a mod mini dress or a dangerously short pair of shorts.

TOO OLD FOR A MINI??? Have you young ladies looked at your peers? How about a weight restriction? Im 36 mother of three, business owner, lift weights, run, and love Winsor Pilates. I deserve a mini skirt!
I’m grosed out by the obese teenaged girls dressing like pole dancers at the food court in the mall. Just because it is made in lycra and can be slid over your inner-tube of a belly, doesn’t mean you should wear it!

  2. Ali says:

I’m with you, Lara! Ditto all the way! I’ve seen teens who have no business wearing lycra or miniskirts.

I’d like to see some young chick call ME ‘Grandma’ or tell me I was too old! ROTFL! I’d show her ‘old’. ;)

    No, you’re not too old.

  3. Jackie says:

If you feel good in it then by all means wear that sexy bikini or mini. I’m 36 and the mother of 2 and I don’t let that stop me! These teens have no clue what it means to feel good about yourself and confident in your own skin.

there is a fine line that defines too old and looks good.if you got the shape and can carry it off go for it! I draw the line at stretch marks and wrinkled skin.

  5. Elle says:

Too old for a mini! Nonsense! I wear a black minis, with black hose, and moderately high oxford flats and a argyle sweater to work. But I would never wear one bear-legged with leggings and high heels. I’m 40. This is my personal style. My opinion is that if you’re older it’s best to wear a mini with a more conservative top, that isn’t super tight, unless you want to look like an ageing hooker. LOL.

As a guy there is a simple rule of thumb concerning women wearing a miniskirt.

If I see a woman from behind in a mini and she looks sexy, then I see her from the front and I’m disappointed then that is someone who, in my opinion, would be better off not wearing a mini.

  7. MARYLISZ says:

It’s funny to read all these comments on “who should wear mini skirts” and never see a “line” where it says:
There’s no age limit – There’s size limit
If at 55 you’re in good shape, who’s to tell your age?!?! maybe live it up to “wonder”, right?!?!
If you’re fat – I, myself, don’t pause to “wonder” anything…It’s unhealthy that’s all. However, does it look good to see a chubby on a mini?!?! It’s all ’bout taste, isn’t it?
    Have fun!!

  8. JL says:

I have one very firm rule. Rather than age I stick to this: If a style has already been in fashion during my ’self-dressing life’ and I have worn it, I DON’T wear it again.
You need an example? In the early ’70’s mini-skirts were all the rage. I was in high school, sewed my own clothes, had great legs, and loved mini-skirts. They’re coming into fashion now, and even though I’m the exact same size as I was then, I’m 52 now, already worn it, and too old.

  9. lela says:

I’m completely disgusted that 28 would be cut-off point for mini skirts. Why should we even have this debate. I am 29, and now that I can financially afford to go to stores and buy myself a mini to show off my pretty toned legs I will! Do they ever have surveys like this for over 28 men wearing fitted T’s or newboy caps? I don’t think so. We are so ageist against women. If you have the goods and the mini looks tasteful, then why not!

  10. Henry says:

My girl friend is 52,and has a great pair of legs since we have started to date she wears mini skirts all the time we go out, with heels and sheer stockings, she looks great and has many compliments.she wore one to work this past monday the 7th of april and was told by mant she looked great,so goes to show you never to old to wear a mini skirt

  11. Marilyn Ellliott says:

I will be 57 years old on April 17th and when I wear a mini skirt, I get complimented by ladies and men young and old of the gorgeous legs I have. I lift weights, exercise regularly and eat properly so when the time comes, that my legs do not compliment the skirt, then I will lengthen my skirts, until then I will enjoy. You are only as old as you feel, and I feel fantastic.

  12. Anne says:

Excuse me, i am 35 and mother of 3 children. I feel young and sexy, and nothing will keep me from wearing a mini skirt or a bikini. Are some of you gals out there a bit jealous over moms like Halle Berry and Kate Moss who have the bodies to show off? It takes hard work to look that way, and why not show it off? I know there’s a bunch who would agree with me.

  13. I'm not wearing one says:

I have a aunt who wears a minnie skirt and she must be pushing 50 everytime I seee her I want to tell her that her legs look like tree stumps. I now vow next time I will tell her.

  14. Rachael says:

As long as I’m still in great shape and guys look and smile I’ll be wearing my minis. I really could care less what girls or women think. Personally I think there should be a weight limit, rather than an age limit from what I’ve seen.

    52 and still lovin’ it.

  15. speakingthetruthforthreedecadesnow says:

Depends on what you mean by “mini” Micromini, in my opinion, should not be worn by anyone over 12. Beyond that and you simply look like a hooker selling her wares. A mini hat falls a few inches from the knee is flattering on women of any age with the legs to carry it off and the good fashion sense to wear a tasteful top and shoes. Micro minis should be left to young women in training of 12 and under. In other words, kids. It’s still cute and innocent. After then, hookerville.
