Embellished Ballet Flats For The Commuter Who Doesn’t Want To Look Like One

image

Working in the city, I always shudder when I see the decidedly un-chic commuter uniform: tennis shoes, tights, and a skirt or dress. There's just something unnerving about dressing for that walk to the train from the ankles down, and your work environment from the knees up. Maybe I'm horribly judgmental and a bad person. Or, maybe I just know that there's an easy solution to being comfortable on the trek to mass transit without compromising style: embellished ballet flats.

Not only will they get you wear you're going faster than slow, painful heels, but they actually hold up fashion-wise in an office, cocktail, or bar situation. Think Sofia Coppolla at the Academy Awards, or Nicole Kidman during her Tom years. Sparkly ballet flats like this sea green pair from J. Crew $278) are low maintenance, high style, and wearable enough to allow you that final sprint through the 6 train's rapidly closing doors.

Can you suggest any flats with good arch support? I love ballet flats but flat does not necessarily mean comfortable, or good for your feet.

I agree with Vanessa. You cannot wear ballet flats for any serious walking. I wear Merrill flats and I really don’t care if I don’t look stylish from the ankle down on my almost 1 mile walk to and from my office, especially in bad weather.
