Runway Recap: Be My Prom Date

Oh, this totally rocks. Prom dresses!

So many interesting twists: the models chose their designers and their moms came in for a visit (after the chickies all wanted sexy numbers). Who would I have chosen? Back in the peer pressure days of my NJ Catholic school, I probably would have made the safe choice of Victorya or Jillian — that way I would be assured the dress would be classic or sweet. Today, though, I would probably choose Rami or Kit, as you know you'd get something well constructed and adventuresome.
 
I found it funny how difficult this challenge was for the designers. Sure, this is not their standard demo or body type, but a great dress is a great dress. Too many of them created dresses that were more appropriate for a fundraising party at Sotheby's than for the prom — Rami's, for example. I wonder if she really wore that to her prom or if she gave it to her mom to wear to the PTA cocktail hour. 

And poor Christian. His model asked for ugly (brown, black lace, rhinestones, oh my!) and he had to oblige. Despite his difficulties, blaming Maddie (who is, what, all of 16?) in front of the judges for the perceived shortcomings of the dress was a major no-no and brought him to the brink of Project Runway extinction. Ironically, the judges didn't seem to hate the dress (I did, however). As for Ricky, I think the dress was very cute and his model clearly loved it. I agree that the color washed her out, but she wanted that color, and he delivered.

Victorya's electric blue trapeze dress was ADORABLE and I wish I could go to the prom wearing it. Sweet P did a fantastic job as well (finally). While I did actually like Victorya's dress better, I was quietly rooting for Sweet P so we would have a rags-to-riches ending, but second place is nothing to sneeze at (or spit at? I do miss that kooky Elisa).

While I am always sad to see the last straight man go, Kevin's dress looked exactly as Nina said–like it cost $29.99 at the mall. It wasn't flattering, it wasn't age appropriate, and it was just blah.  While Christian was a cross between a crybaby and a jerk, at least he came up with something interesting.
