Spring Trend: Hippie Is Back (Without Any Saddlebags)

After Balmain, Muiccia Prada, Nina Ricci, and Roberto Cavalli's Spring shows, all the fashion mags are buzzing about next season's hippie revival. Fringe, gauze, crochet, and free love seem to be re-emerging as fashionista must-haves. And as far as I'm concerned, this is good news…because wasn't it still in style last season? I think they just called it boho. Those crazy editors and their semantics.

However, hippie fashions must be worn carefully elsewise good intentions can yield a costume…or worse… you'll end up looking like your overweight high school English teacher. You know – the one who never shaved her legs and sincerely mourned the marriage of Gloria Steinem? Yeah. Her. Remember to update fringed and flowy looks with modern touches – be it sophisticated shoes, a waist-cinching belt, or structural jewelry. It's all in the details, and a strict avoidance of everything patchouli.

Here are some of my suggestions to get a jump on the trend:

The Zucca Jersey Crochet Dress ($710) is light and airy – perfect for those warm spring days.

Pair this Rebecca Taylor Tunic (was $310, now $93) with a pair of killer jeans – just make sure they're not bell-bottoms.

This Milly Flutter Sleeve Dress ($374) comes in a funky pattern and fun, flowy shape.

For those hot weather nights ahead, cool down with this Twelfth Street Tunic ($114, was $275).
