Trend Alert: The Ikat Print Invades 2008

It’s a wonder your biggest designers haven’t lined the runway with it because this fabric is the new year’s big hit. One might even say it’s the Ikat’s pajamas. The Fall 2007 collections of the likes of Balenciaga and Armani were awash with this resist-dying technique which has trickled down into the ethnic-inspired looks of Zara, Topshop, and Etsy.

Topshop's Ikat Print Tie Waist Top ($32) and Stripe Longline Camisole ($50) show off this psychedelic print and look fierce paired with skinny jeans and biker boots.

But why stop there? Burberry makes a stunning Ikat cocktail dress ($2950) that makes your LBD look just plain boring. This Hache Print Bustier Dress ($560) is another stellar standout.

My personal faves come in the form of lingerie – like Topshop's Ikat mesh bra and panty get-up (bra $24, panty $8).  Ain't no Ik about it, ladies.

actually ikat is a traditional handloom method of weaving. i am using tradtional ikat blankets from indonesia to make stunning jackets for my fall collection (my label is white rice). the threads are first dyed with a resist method and then threaded onto the loom in order for the geometric type motif to appear. it is quite scientific and organic at the same time!
