Arm Hair: We Have It, We’ll Keep It

The beauty blog over at Shine recently posed a question about arm hair: Keep it, wax it, or what?

hairy forearms

Well, I thought about it at the beginning of this summer, as I do at the beginning of every bare-armed season, and concluded once again that I just don’t really care.  I save the expense and mild pain for beach-season bikini waxes, and shave legs and armpits regularly but not religiously.

American women didn’t begin shaving armpit hair until the ’20s, when depilatory manufacturers ran ads for such a thing, basically turning into the status quo.  It just doesn’t seem right that Bliss should be parading around a person dressed as a gorilla to convince women to go absolutely hairless.

So what do you think about arm hair and anti-hair advertising?  We have to admit – while we don’t like Bliss’ gorilla, we do like their Poetic Waxing Kit ($45).

We just wouldn’t use it on our arms.

I got my arm hair waxed off in India – where everyone gets it removed – when I was 18. I’ve kept it up ever since and did laser hair removal on my arms (and everywhere else). I think arm hair is gross.

I’m with Michelle. I’ve been waxing my arms intermittently since I was 13 (I know) – hair interrupts the clean lines of my bangle bracelets.

I have arm hair but i just don’t care. maybe because it is fairly light colored. i might feel differently if i had dark hair. I used to try waxing it, but it was just ingrowns and stubble and a nightmare all around. There has to be a line somewhere, with all the hair removal we go through as women.

i think that’s ridiculous. just one more thing for women to be self-conscious about.

Generally, I don’t think it’s anything to bother with. But if it’s particularly dark or thick (like the lady in the pic above) there’s nothing wrong with a bit of maintenence. I trim mine short (but not stubble-length short) with a bikini trimmer and it’s a lot less noticable.

I think it depends on the nationality and the hair color. I have blonde arm hair, but I do not mind cause it is not noticeable. However, when you have dark, thick hair I completely understand waxing.

It is very sexy. I leave it.
