What: L'Oreal Double Extend Lash Extension Effect Mascara, $11
Why: If there's one beauty product out there that almost never lives up to its glamorous hype, it's mascara—after all, how are we to know those long-lashed models in the commercials aren't wearing falsies? So it's always a pleasant surprise when all an advertisement's techno-babble and percent-longer promises actually turn out to be true.
I'll admit, I was skeptical about trying L'Oreal Double Extend Lash Extension Effect Mascara (the commercial claims "Lashes look 80 percent longer!" and shows little animated spirals corkscrewing around lashes to lengthen). But once I'd gotten through the two application steps—a nourishing and lengthening white base coat and a darkening and extending black topcoat— I was glad I'd taken the plunge. My lashes actually did look longer (by 80 percent, I'm not so sure) and I made it through a whole day with none of that icky black dust that most mascaras leave under my eyes.
I even slept in the stuff and woke up with a just-applied eye look. I was even impressed with the science-y way the mascara washed off; it really did come off in little lash-shaped tubes, just as hyped in the ad.
