I Resolve To Stop Dressing Like Johnny Cash

Okay, so I don't actually dress like Johnny Cash, but the man was known for always wearing black and when I peer into my closet I often wonder if I, too, am on my way to a funeral. Most of my clothes are black or grey, which is ideal for pairing separates, but not for lightening my mood. With the new year, I want to shake things up and introduce some  – gasp – color into my brooding closet.

For anyone else in need of some brightness, my advice is to start small. Don't go all out with a loud dress just yet. Layer some color with your neutral staples – that way, you won't feel totally out of your element.

Begin with a colorful tunic or blouse and pair with your favorite sweater and jeans.  This Eileen Fisher Tunic ($138) is an unusual shade of orange and the perfect long length. Layer it with a Belted Bomber Sweater ($69) in muted grey that you can zip high or low depending on how much color you want to peek out. Pull on a pair of Rich & Skinny Super Skinny Black Jeans ($152) and step out into your brave new world.
