Finally, a break from the standard summer chick flick. Julie & Julia opened this weekend, and it was great to see a non-ridiculous movie with good acting and some serious old school style.
I’m not even going to talk about the “Julie” parts of the movie with Amy Adams because her character was irritating and her clothes were uniformly frumpy. Meryl Streep’s “Julia,” aka Julia Child, is a different story. Meryl-as-Julia was the embodiment of everyday elegance, as seen in two trends that we can still wear today.
1. Pearls were Julia Child’s signature necklace, and they can be yours too. Cop her style directly with a simple, single strand ($98), or give the look a modern twist ($48).
2. High waisted skirts with skinny belts were a wardrobe go-to for this flick. Ann Taylor Loft obviously got the memo, but their pencil skirt/belt combo is a little too monochromatic. Spice it up with a different colored belt instead.
