It's getting increasingly more confusing to figure out what products work to make our skin brighter, our hair shinier, or our nails stronger. Which is why going back to the basics, and exploring what we put in our bodies in the first place is a wise approach. In Lisa Drayer's new book, The Beauty Diet: Looking Great Has Never Been So Delicious, the nutritionist explores which foods will truly make you feel and look your best. And now SheFinds is giving away the book to five lucky readers!
Share with us in the comments what tried-and-true beauty solution keeps you rejuvenated, protected, and feeling your best. And read on for Lisa's tips on how to stay beautiful…by eating! (Note: All below product picks are SheFinds suggestions, and not those of Lisa Drayer.)
1. To keep a youthful, glowing appearance, eat foods that provide your features with optimal nutrition. Our features are enhanced—or hindered by specific nutrients in our diet. Brittle nails? Maybe you’re not consuming enough iron. And help your nails get stronger from the outside in with OPI Nail Envy ($16).
2. For a terrific smile, take that bottle off your desk. The sugars in sodas, sports drinks, and energy drinks all wreak havoc on your teeth by feeding bacteria, which can ultimately cause cavities. Stick with the beauty beverages water and unsweetened green tea to maintain a gleaming white smile. Check out SheFinds' Teeth Whitening Guide for ways to keep your teeth bright and shining.
3. Protect your skin with edible sunscreen. In addition to applying sunscreen, you can protect the surface of your skin from the inside out by adding a variety of photoprotective foods to your diet. Studies have shown that eating these foods reduces burning and other damage caused by sun exposure. Never step foot out the door without a sunscreen like Clinique City Block in SPF 25 ($17.50).
5. Protect your eyes with nature's natural sunglasses. Lutein filters out blue light, which is believed to be damaging-hence, lutein has been dubbed natural sunglasses. Lutein is not manufactured by the body, so the only way to obtain it is by eating it. Spinach, one of my Top 10 Beauty Foods, is an excellent source of lutein. And don't forget to don a killer pair of sunglasses ($115).
5.Iron is a must-have mineral for lovely, lustrous locks. Iron plays a role in hair health because it helps red blood cells carry oxygen to the hair follicles. Iron deficiency can also leave you with lusterless, dry, brittle hair. Oysters and spinach, two of my Top 10 Beauty Foods, are good sources of iron. Keep your locks shiny after styling with Frederic Fekkai's Glossing Cream ($20) – made with nutrient-rich olive oil.
