More News: Bakelite Auction Tomorrow, Plus Our Own (Cheaper) Picks

bakelite necklace

Tomorrow, a massive collection of Bakelite jewelry will be auctioned off at New York’s Bonhams. The owner of the collection, Susan Kelner Freeman, has been collecting the plastic vintage jewelry for over 40 years, reports the LA Times Blog. We’ve always loved Bakelite–it’s cheap, lightweight easy to wear, and comes in lots of tons of colors.

It seems to be auction season–first it was Audrey Hepburn’s legendary clothes, then Elton John auctioned his closet off the next week. We wonder if it’s a good time, considering a lot of people already have their wallets open–maybe some of these prized possessions end up being very extravagant holiday gifts.

Back during the ’20s, the jewelry was one of the cheapest types around, coming in lots of colors and shapes, but tomorrow at auction, some of the pieces could be sold for up to $3,000, like white bangles that look like ivory, and brooches in the shapes of animals like foxes, frogs and fruit like bananas.

If you won’t make it to auction, here are some chunky bracelets inspired by Bakelite–they make great stocking stuffers:

These Alexis Bittar lucite bracelets look great together, or separate. Either way, we’re fans.

betsey johnson bangle

This red and white striped bangle by Betsey Johnson is a little bit nautical–but also a little bit like a candy cane. Regardless, it’s cute and will punch up a neutral outfit easily, and it’s really affordable.

We love that this Kate Spade clear and polka dot bangle is all about having fun, embodying the spirit of Bakelite: fun–and unfussy–jewelry that everyone can afford.

We’ve got even more fun bracelets and necklaces for you to choose from.
