The Survey: Yes, Luxury Spending Goes On

SF_SpendChart6_090809

We asked, you answered – whether it’s a coat, boots, jewelry, handbag, or a month’s worth of spa treatments or beauty products, we wanted to know on what item you’ll always spend more than $500.  Of those who responded that they would indeed spend over $500 for any of those luxury goods and services, we’re particularly impressed that 13% of respondents would spring for two or more of the items in question.

Our questions and comments below – what are yours?

- An overwhelming number or respondents said they’d spend more than $500 on a handbag. Maybe that’s why Hermes recently posted a 12% increase in sales, specifically in leather goods.

- New York Fashion Week just concluded, and all the attendant craziness that had ebbed last season is back. Are there still customers for $900 polyurethane leggings?

- Fewer women are spending big bucks on boots than anything else – is it because inexpensive shoes are prettier than ever?

We’d love to hear your thoughts.  And whether you’re a spendthrift or a skinflint (or both!) be sure to check out our guides to the best boots, coat trends, and fall handbags, all of which hit a useful range of prices.  However, if you’re looking to tote a handbag on the cheap, we’d recommend taking a look at the best handbags under $250.

Where is the NOTHING option? What happened to all of the positive changes that this recession should have encouraged. Even when you can spend a lot on something, should you? Choose no! No more! Remember what is important.

There was a none of the above choice – about half of all respondents, but we wanted to focus on if you were going to spend $500 what would you spend it on?
