This is a bittersweet post for me as up until a few days ago I was supposed to be in this outfit going to the inauguration's many glorious galas. But alas, it will not come to pass, and instead I will share with readers what they should be wearing if they are lucky enough to attend. So if for some reason you've waited until the last minute to find a gown or were the third string date and the first and second picks mysteriously disappeared, then there's still time to pull something together to make you look like you were on the guest list all along.
Most importantly, dress in color. You will see more black than inside a New York closet, so take a cue from Mrs. Obama and wear a bold (but still flattering) colored gown in a simple cut. For jewelry, make a statement with one or two large pieces – don't go over the top by adorning yourself with head-to-toe diamonds. A First Lady favorite, Erickson Beamon, makes ornate cuffs that would be perfect for evening events. Pair with a simpler deco-inspired necklace to add some sparkle to a bare neck. For shoes, stay on trend and sport the cage heel in a complementary metallic hue. Finally, keep the color coming with a bright satin clutch (like one from J. Crew – which could coincidentally become a conversation piece lest you find yourself in a tête à tête with Michelle.) And of course, it will be cold so leave the puffer behind and bundle up in an elegant, fur cuff coat.
