Win All These Recycled Accessories (Worth $640), And Go Green For Free

Today on Better.tv, we’re on a mission to prove that recycled accessories are just as cool, stylish and useful as anything that’s made from new materials – and it’s usually a whole lot better for the environment, too.

Below are seven of our favorite recycled finds – and we’re giving a lucky reader every single one. To enter, sign up for our newsletter then comment below about what you’re doing to go green.

1. Harvey’s Treecycle Handbag, $148
Made from: Recycled seatbelts
These cute shoulder bags are lined in hemp, and printed with eco-friendly ink, so the whole operation is eco-conscious.

2. Lela Designs Tops, $68-$74 (we’re giving away a $200 gift certificate to the site)
Made from: PET, a fabric derived from recycled plastic soda bottles
The good thing about PET is that – something like a plastic bottle – it’s lightweight and durable, so the fabric is ideal for activewear. Unlike a plastic bottle, though, you can fashion it into pink ruffles and collared polo shirts – great for golf, or just for doing errands.

3. Trash to Trendy Platinum Clutch, $85
Made from: Recycled dry-cleaner bags
This bag is just the right size to carry all your night-out essentials and still fit comfortably under your arm. And the dry-cleaner-bag bit is a great conversation-starter at a crowded party.

4. White + Warren Remix Bomber Jacket, $165
Made from:
Cotton that’s spun from old T-shirts
This  jacket isn’t even dyed  – the color comes from the old tees themselves. Plus, it’s a more-interesting alternative to your everyday cardigan for fall or early spring.

5. Telephone Wire Bangle Bracelet, $25
Made from: Recycled telephone wire
These South African-made bracelets are so eco-cool, Diane von Furstenberg sent the down the runway at her show last spring. Wear one alone, or stack a couple for an even stronger statement.

6. ecoTOOLS 5-Piece Brush Set, $16.99
Made from:
Recycled aluminum tubes
At under $4 per brush, these are a pretty good bargain for a full face worth of makeup tools – and sustainable: the handles are made from renewable bamboo.

7. Nahui Ollin Headband, $18
Made from:
Recycled candy bar wrappers
These bright headbands come in tons of different designs (depending on the sort of wrapper that’s used, of course), and have a stretchy band at the back to counteract the wrapper-y stiffness.

I am taking my husband’s families recyclables since their townships are not required to recycle and making sure they get recycled properly through my recycler. I am taking newspapers and recycling them through my son’s daycare.

  • Stacy McLaughlin

Love the headband! What neat ideas for everything!!

  • Jennifer Lynch

I have been recycling up a storm since I moved away from home, whether it’s using the milk jug to start new flowers using old magazines and paper to make recycled tablets, and journals…Nothing is too old to be use for something else:) I love what you are doing with all these products they are fabulous and saving the world a little at a time!

  • Hannah E.

I am trying to get better organized so I know what I have and what I dont. This makes me consume less and think about whether or not I can make the same result out of what I have vs. buying more. Going green is for me a combination of using what I have (reducing waste) and buying less.

  • Donna

I have been going green for a few months now. Teaching my children the importance of doing this. Saving our enviornment is important to me. purpletango4@aol.com

  • Donna Mango

I also found that going green can prevent certain diseases. I had throid cancer 15 yrs. ago. I researched and found it is caused by the enviornment. So going green if it helps to possibly lower our diseases, then we all should go green.

  • Michelle

I have started shopping with my own bags! I love it! I also recycle paper goods from newspapaers to magazines. One of the ways I recycle is by donating the items to the schools and letting the students use them and then they place them in their big recycle bins on campus when they are finished. That way I am helping in more than one way!

  • CC

I have kids now, they make you more aware of everything.

  • Tanjie

I take full advantage of my community’s curbside recycling service and I also take items not accepted curbside to the recycling center. My family regularly donates items to area clothes closets rather than trashing them…and I’m training my husband about the “off” buttons located on the TV set and the light switches throughout the house. We also unplug the toaster, the phone chargers, etc., when not using them.

  • SHERRIE

I use my own shopping bags when food shopping. I use green cleaning products.Purchased reuseable water bottles.

  • Michelle

I think going green is the best way to go. You can save so much money and help our environment substantially!

  • name

Our neighborhood recently was given the option to purchase a recycle trash can and have pick up service for a small monthly fee to pick up unsorted recyclables. I have been recycling for the past few years now and I would load up my SUV with all my family’s recycle and take it to the local recycle bins with my children who helped sort and throw the items in the correct bins. Now the recycle trash cans make it easier for me.

  • Vinu

Going green is the new trend! I have been using recyclable shopping bags instead of plastic/paper bags from store. Also, I have been recycling plastics, restoring all the bulbs with fluorescent ones. I have been using wine bottles are a flower vase and switching off the light when not in use.

  • name

    Recycling everything!

  • Jen

Our family recycles, and as a Girl Scout leader I save a lot of things that would otherwise go out to the curb to use with my troop for crafts and activities. Also, my older daughter’s school participates in the terracycle program, so our chip and cookie bags go to good use! Now if I could just convince my daughters to take short showers….LOL

  • Deb

I use recycle bags when I go to the grocery store. I also started taking water in glass bottles rather than plastic.

  • alicia

I am recycling at home. I am reusing computer paper by printing on both sides and if it is only one sided, I am reprinting on the other side. I am donating clothes. I am shutting off lights and water.

  • Kelly

First of all, I use my own bags when grocery shopping. I also recycle all paper and plastics through our city’s recycling program, use energy efficient lights, and make crafts with my daughter using old buttons, newspaper, baby food jars, or other items. I make regular donations to the local thrift store with all my old clothes or household items that would normally be thrown away and try to do a lot of outside activities with the kids rather than driving places.

  • Deb

At home we make sure things are unplugged when not in use. Turn the TV off when out of the room. We have electric base board heat and we turn the heat off in the rooms not in use. As far as driving I can’t afford to get a different car but I do make sure because we live in the country that we do several things when we venture into the city. Save the gas.

  • Jolynn Johnson

I recycle everyday at work and home. I have a garden and it gets a fresh dose of leftovers and anything else that can help our earth.

  • KathyG

I love what you are doing with these products. I have done a number of things to go green, which include collecting a neighbor’s recycling and including it in mine. I also share a newspaper subscription with a neighbor (reduce), use cloth bags and find uses or places to donate things I no longer want or need rather than throwing into trash to fill up the landfills.

  • Chrystal Witkowski

I’ve been trying to by biodegradable thing’s! Like my biodegradable pens I just bought! I have been also buying old sweaters and making mittens and hat’s out of them and buying old jeans and different thing’s and weaving them into rugs! And that’s how I’m going green!!

  • Ingrid

We recycle everything at home. We reuse old shopping bags and use cloth bags at the store. I am a teacher and I am working on a way to make our school a “green” school. We have gotten a great start by being in a brand new building that is energy efficient!

  • bets

we recently got married and with all the extra decorations and things we used for the reception we donated them to others that could use them instead of just throwing them away and we use them around the house now too!

  • Dee S.

I use my own shopping bags, recycle, don’t buy anymore bottled water (bought my own container) to help keep our world green! Our children & grandchildren deserve to have a world for them, too! KEEP OUR WORLD GREEN!! EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS!! :)

  • Cielo

Trying to find ways of using less paper and plastic when I pick up lunch at work including brining my own bag, avoiding places that use styrofoam, and reusing silverwear.

  • Liz

I am learning to be – and have been for the last two years – my own food supply. I have only a small balcony to work with in urban Philadelphia, but already I have had moderate success with lettuces, radishes, beets, tomatoes, and, well, a few brussels sprouts. Luscious strawberries peer out from the foliage from time to time for an unexpected treat while I’m caring for everything else. I have recently – in the last year – started an active heat compost bin outdoors and reduced my kitchen waste by over 50%. I’ve also found, in my garden, ways to keep things like those horrible styrofoam popcorns out of the landfill – it makes a nice, light, nonintrusive filler at the very bottom of planters where plants with shallow roots will never reach. And, I don’t break my back when I lift them! I started this project after having joined Food to City, a program where urban dwellers make a connection with a local farm in the form of a promise to buy a certain share of their production. When I moved to a studio and simply couldn’t eat or put away all of that food, I started my garden. Now, I suppose, my goal of reducing my carbon footprint has taken a small step forward.

  • Christina W.

I’ve been recycling and carry reusable bags with me so I don’t have to waste any plastic bags. I’m trying to switch to more green products at home as well.

  • dana

    I recycle and compost

  • Sonal

recycling, reusing, donating. I’ve found a palce that will even take artscraps including the empty hand towel rolls, old picture frames ,magnets. Given my dress clothes to an organization that helps find prom dresses for young girls! OOOh and no more paper or plastic at the grocery store!

  • Lea

I recycle all my pop cans and I take the pop tabs to a local hospital where they collect them for the ronald mcdonald house.

  • Nancy

I recycle and reuse as much as I can, I do not buy anything individually sized; no paper towels or napkins. I read online magazines and newspapers and I decline catalogs and any other print advertising. I also donate and purchase clothes from second hand shops because there are so many great bargains for me and my family at a fraction of the cost- you just keep on looking. I make a point to live with less so there is no clutter and no need to purchase and have so many things. I buy books at the bookstore for a quarter and give them away once I am done- I donate these to my local thrift shop to benefit our community.

  • Lindsey

The resturant i work at we started a recycling program. We recycle everything we can, boxes, old tickets, to-go containers that are left behind and whatever else we can do. Most of the things recycled need to be taken to Michigan since the local ones dont recycle it but we make sure it gets there!

  • Angie

We make ornaments out of old cards to donate to the nursing home. It brightens the days of the residents and recycles the cards.

  • Rebecca

My household has been using reusable grocery bags for over 5 years, we only use 1 vehicle when we can walk, bike, or take public transportation. We recycle everything we are able to including car parts and electronics. We use as litte water, electricity and natural gas as possible. And finally all summer we compost for extra nutrients for our homegrown vegetables,

  • susan

I do what is accepted as curbside recycling as well as take other recyclables to our closest dropoff. I also use all the new lightbulbs and compost green kitchen waste.

  • lynda

My 12 year old son is all about going green. We buy as many “recycled items” as we can, we shop at thrift stores, anything we can donate we do: habitat for humanity will take almost any household item imaginable including light bulbs and house fixtures (they resell them to provide money for their projects). We pick up trash in our neighborhood if we see it, and we are looking into building our own home using solar panels and other energy saving features. We try to remember how our actions will impact all ecosystems

  • Joannie

We as a family go through our clothes and give to other families that want them. We have given old blankets to the homeless. We recycle at our house and those things that our recyclers don’t pick up we take to a recycling center. We also make paper mache things with the old news paper, we have made picture hanger out of old jeans. We give away old books. We try very hard to reuse, reduce and recycle.

  • Rebecca

sorry that should have been……when we can’t walk, bike or take public transportation

  • carol

We sold my car, and while it has not been really easy, my daughter and I share a car. We just decided to make less trips, do less errands, cut down on our carbon footprint. We are also hugely into recycling.

  • monalisa

We recycle everything – glass, plastic, paper, cans. And we Sail – the wind is free.

I am a mother of 3 and really wanting to teach my children the beauty and practicality of being green. My oldest daughter is particulary resourceful and creative. She can make beauty from ashes. I would love to see her learn to make art and practical items from the garbage around her.

  • Stacy Zaitz

  • Rebekah

To stay green my husband and I are turning off the lights and unplugging appliances we are not using, and of course we are recycling.

  • Rae

I am using only green works cleaning supplies and I make sure that my family recycles. We also have a compost heap that we use on our garden instead of fertilizer. We’ve decided that it is better to pick the bugs off then to spray chemicals :)

  • Judy

I am washing dishes by hand. I am walking to do errands instead of using a car. I am recycling instead of throwing stuff into the garbage can. I am using reuseable grocery bags instead of plastic bags.

  • Judith Hopkins

Growing up rather poor, we loved to reused, recycle at an early age. Still continue the practice and encourage others to do the same.

  • Judy

I put my trash in my co-worker’s plastic lined bag — thus not having to use the one under my desk nor have the janitor take and replace one more plastic bag daily!

  • Krystal Chasez

I think it is very important to help the earth, I believe I do a lot to go green. I recycle, I try to teach the kids I watch how important it is to recycle papers, cans etc. and how it is important not to leave water running when it is not in use. I think everyone should do everything to help the environment no matter how small or how big the task is.

  • colleen

I am constantly teaching my kids about recycling and conserving water and energy. When possible we like to walk to the grocery store and always try to use our resuable bags.

  • Jeanne Pairman

My family has been on the green bandwagon for many years now. We recycle all paper, metal, plastic and glass that we touch on a daily basis. My 2 year old grandson loves helping to feed the recycle bins. If we no longer have a use for a usable item we will donate to an appropriate source or resell (consignments are great for baby/children’s items). I have recently changed out all our chemical cleaning products for ones that we can make using simple natural ingredients.

  • Lena

As one of my new year resolutions, I am on a quest to find the greenest bath and body care products – that are packed in recycled/renewable materials of course. Since these are items that I use daily (or even twice a day) then I feel I should use products that are less harmful to the earth and possibly to my health.

My family has been recycling for years thanks to the New York City Sanitation Dept’s recycling program (the threat of a ticket from them is a pretty good incentive to sort our garbage too!)

  • sirena@shaklee.net

I am going green by: recycling & reusing containers, bottles, paper and bags or avoid use by using canvas bags, sigg bottle and “regular dishes, use eco friendly products, use biodegradeable dog waste bags, pet sponge (instead of paper rolls that u toss), unplug any electronics when not in use, don’t drive unless absolutely necessary and then combine all trips and hypermile as best I know how.

We only use cloth bags now when we go to the store and we’re no longer buying single serve plastic bottles of water. Instead we each have our own PBA free bottles that we refill. Thanks so much for this giveaway.

  • Michelle

recycle,of course. Looking to buy recycled sheets, jewelry and hoping to move into a home with solar capability, and a place to compose and gardening.

  • Kathy D.

I’m horrible. I want to do more, but I walk around feeling guilty a lot. I just signed up for this to tell the truth and thought if I win this.. it must be a sign from up above that I better get on the stick and turn that guilt into action.

  • Denine

Our household recycles recyclables; such as certain plastic bottles, card boards, newspaper, styrofaoms and much more. We also experiement with various recycled household products. • Chanda

  • NICHOLAS ELIAS NIEVES

    WHAT YOU MEAN….RECYCLED??

  • MV

I always use cloth bags for my groceries and bought several at the supermarket for my parents to use because I noticed they would collect a cabinet full of plastic bags. They have been converted. I also carpool whenever possible to cut back on emissions and save gas and donate old clothing as long as it is in good condition to Goodwill or other charities. It feels good knowing someone else can benefit from clothing I don’t use anymore but is still perfectly fine. And I always recycle all my magazines and newspapers as well as plastic and glass bottles every week. And I also use green cleaning products because I worry about toxic products.

  • Mellissa C

I have started buying food in bulk and buying brands that are good for the environment.

I recycle through our local garbage department, I recycle leftover food and some newspapers in my mulch bin, I am an avid paper mache maker and instead of buying new already pulverized mix at the arts store I make my own by bleaching newspaper in a tub, and using it to layer paper mache as it is supposed to be done, i am a member of our local freecycle online group and have recycled several things I never use and gotten some things I could put to use, and one of the most important things I do is to educate my 4 grandaughters not only about recycling but about buying items that can be recycles or that have several applications. If we don’t pass this knowledge on to the next generation it will be of no avail.

  • Terry

We are recycling/composting 90% of our house hold trash. Because of the dramatic reduction, we also evaluate the packaging as part of our purchase decisions.

  • Amethyst

It has been 2+ years since we stopped buying bottled water. We bought a filter and that way we save money, we don’t create more waste, and we drink clean water.

  • Jennifer Miller

My husband and I both bought new cell phones from our provider that is made from corn! We also, when we got our house, instead of throwing away the excess wood and trash cans/containers, we made our own recycling bin that holds plastics, glass, paper and a smaller one for plastic bags. We usually take our own reusable bag, though, so we cut down on using plastic bags, but we recycle any that we do get.

  • Jessica

I walk to work. It saves the environment and my gas money!

  • Pilotshoprincess

Because we are in aviation no one thinks of us as green BUT even we have found to recycle reuse and reduce! Our expired charts become wrapping paper or wall paper, we use green cleaners and waxes, and recycle whatever we can in our hometown since our business town doesnt have a recycling program. We accept old charting from our customers in exchange for a discount on the new! and when we can find any tiny way to practice the three Rs we jump on it! As a result many of our pilots have become more aware and proactive! We are also HUGE fans of the new SWAPMAMAS website! http://www.swapmamas.com Darcy is really onto something!

I am a faithful subscriber who really loves the drift of this giveaway. I live as green-ly as I can…recycling, using organics and saving on power and water as much as possible. My own pet project is tree planting, so I plant as many as I can often giving good strong yooung trees native to the area to those I gift along with a little book of tree care hints. Some of my gifts have been in the ground for some time and they are flourishing. This gift really makes me happy..Great giveaway…thanks!

We recycle, buy energy efficient light bulbs and appliances, and use re-useable grocery/shopping bags!

  • Sara Alvaro

What great products. I am a consummate recycler and am always picking up things and repurposing them.

  • Lisa

To help the environment and be green, I consume no animal products and do not own a car. Even though I use less resources, I am a happy and fulfilled with the simple pleasures of vegetables and bicycles.

  • melissa mc

I’ve been recycling and composting kitchen scraps and such for almost 20 yrs already (time flies!!!), and will continue till I can’t do it no more lol… i’ve been using tote bags for groceries more often as the plastic ones are a major pollution problem when you see them floating around the roads/highways, strewn around parking lots/empty fields, etc… also, i’ve been trying to eat more organic foods as they have made a difference in my health — thank you for the chance!

Our family is making so much progress towards becoming green! WE started out slowly and have been working up and still working on being more eco-conscious! Of course, we recycle, make 1 trip for errands as opposed to too many and we have turned down the water heater temperature and take only 5 minute showers. This winter we have kept our furnace temperature cooler and warm more layers in our home. Many thanks, Cindi

  • Rayetta Lovett

    I love the seatbelt purse

  • Cate

I’ve been recycling the multitude of soda cans I produce for awhile. Recently I’ve been using cloth grocery bags, which is fantastic because I don’t live in fear that the bag will break and my stuff will roll all over the parking lot anymore.

  • Sara

I’ve eliminated disposable plastics from my life. If I get stuck in a situation where I have to utilize something that is a disposable plastic, I make sure to use it a minimum of twenty times (which is the minimum necessary to achieve sustainability). I carry around a set of travel chopsticks with me to eliminate the need for plastic utensils and am never without my own drinking container to eliminate the need for disposable cups when I go out. I no longer use plastic wrap or plastic sandwich baggies and instead use aluminum foil that I recycle after using. Aluminum foil is one of the only things that you can recycle and get almost 100% back from.
I buy my milk in paper cartons instead of plastic jugs, and get my cereal in bulk using special light cloth bags instead of plastic ones at the grocery store.
I gave up all meat except for seafood and only eat seafood that is on the sustainable seafood list (from the seafood watch program). I don’t have the list memorized, so I carry a copy in my phone, and now that people always ask how to get their own list when I use mine, I carry extra wallet copies (that are bound with ribbon to prevent their being thrown away mindlessly).

  • Dianne C

I’m in the process of changing light bulbs to more energy efficient. Using more household staples (ex: vinegar & water) solutions as cleaning aids. Taking outdated clothing & using the fabric to make other items, ex: dated cotton dress, cut into fabric pieces to make other items.

Dear and I have made big changes to go green. We only buy organic and ethic harvested foods. We bought chickens and planted a garden. As for this year we are saving up for solar panels : )

  • Sue

Without trying, I have been green for years just by doing things my grandma did because she had too. I water all of my houseplants using water used to cook pasta, vegetables etc. Don’t pour it down the drain, let it cool and use. Your houseplants will love you for the added minerals. Also, sprinkle used coffee grounds on top of the soil!

  • Kathy

We are using reusable shopping bags, replacing lightbulbs as they burn out with CFLs, and recycling or composting everything we can.

  • helenlam

I conserve, recycle, compost, and reuse as much as possible. My household generates very little landfill material!

  • luda

I do as much as possible.I take old books and magazines to Half price books store.

  • Barbara Maietta

I’m driving a lot less and planning my trips better. I also use cloth bags at the stores. I’ve unplugged all unnecessary things and cut my electric bill. I only water twice a week. These are the many ways that I’ve gone green!

  • JL

I have been recycling for years. Glad to see that it is now a “Trend”.
Every little bit saves something for the next generations to enjoy.

I get the pleasure of watching a fox family in the early morning and the sadness of the housing development encroaching on it’s natural habitat. The deer have left and the fox are having a troubling time finding room to hunt.

Downsize and Recycle, you’ll find more time to enjoy what we drive by everyday!

  • mary

I am trying to recycle more. I have given old newspapers to a local animal shelter. They use them for the cages. I collect odds end to give to a daycare, she uses them for arts and craft for the kids. I always take our unused clothes to the salvation army. I love that the bags and bracelets are made of those products. We could use more of that.

  • Sherry Cowan

We recycle cans, reuse plastic bags & donate old clothing to charity.

  • Bree

Changing out lightbulbs with low wattage bulbs, unplugging devices and appliances when not in use, and using low flow shower heads.

  • Erin Glee

Our family is very conscience of recycling our glass, cans, paper and plastic. We have a compost bin for the garden. I used cloth diapers for both kids and line-dried them when weather permitted. Now school-age, they have sandwich containers thatI wash instead of plaqstic bags that add to the landfill… I could go on! I love all these recycled products in your Giveaway~Thanks for the chance!

  • julia

i’ve been an avid recycler for years as well as a water conscious person since the age of six. with a 14 month old at home now, i’m doing all i can to teach my son about reducing, reusing & recycling.

  • Tamara R.

We drive a hybrid, recycle everything we can and have all of our electronics on power strips to turn them off when not in use.

  • Kirsten

I’ve begun eating healthier, so I’m buying less packaged and processed foods and more local products to cut down on my bio-footprint. I also bring and use my own tote bags to the farmers market and store.

  • gina

    Less wasting overall.

  • Karen Propes

I recycle, but also, use glasses instead of plastic bottles, buy only items that are in recyclable containers. Use less just use and toss items.

  • Jane Stanze

We have recycle bins – actually recycled grocery store brown bags – in our two home offices and one in the kitchen. We don’t buy bottled water and we compost kitchen scraps to use in the garden.

  • Randi

I collect used kids clothes that are in good condition. I clean them, and pass them on to moms who can use them. Kids outgrow clothes so fast that sometimes they hardly look worn. Moms appreciate the savings.

  • Diana

Our household recycles all paper, glass, plastic, and tin. I always bring my own green bags when shopping.

  • Amy Stern

Along with recycling, I am also using ‘green’ cleaning products and replacing all of our light bulbs with the eco-friendly ones.

  • Claudia

I’m being more consistent about recycling the paper, glass, containers and cans that our city allows. We’re also saving all bottle and jar tops for a nearby school to recycle. Also, if I leave my own bags in my car, they’re there for grocery shopping.

  • Sally

I have a water filter on my kitchen faucet so I do not need to buy bottled water.

  • Karen A

I joined freecycle several years ago and have been really pleased with the green mission. I have been able to give articles to others that post a request rather than send items to the landfill. I have given everything from what I considered scraps from building/home remodeling projects to non-working appliances. This is a great national organization that has local networks in most areas.

  • Dawn Blaus

Since my trash service does not offer recycling, I sort my recyclables into “recycled” laundry bins and make the drop myself (Usually once a month). I try to take large loads so that I’m also not adding too much CO2 with my driving. I consolidate trips so that I minimize my driving around on errands & recently, I’ve switched from paper towels to reusable microfiber. Small steps that will hopefully make a difference.

  • Rosette

I have been gathering recycle beverage containers and cashing them in to donate to Heifer International. It is found money to help others less fortunate in our now tight economy it is harder to find funds, but the heart is willing there is a way to help. I share this with who ever I talk to in case they would like to assist in putting use to their recyclables also.

I`m using energy effencient light bulds and I`m using coal in my fire place & rolled newspaper logs. I`m seperating my trash and taking all plastic to the recycler. I`m using all food scraps that aren`t going to my animals in a composte heap.

  • Aisling

We’re doing lots of “little” things that add up – reusable bags for groceries and other shopping, recycling, paying more attention to ingredients in food and cosmetics, incorporating trips that require a car into a single trip to hit all the stops instead of making multiple trips.

  • Helen Finco

I am totaly into recycling every thing and anything that the plant here takes. I remember years ago when everything was thrown out but do recall my Grandmother recycling old clothes to make beautiful rag rugs…a talent which my sister does to this day.

  • Marna

I have been going green for many years. If it can be recycled or reused, I have done it. I try to recycle as much as possible in our compost bins too, used in our garden it saves us and the planet. On garbage day I have reduced our usage to point we have very little trash, but a lot for recycling.

  • Mary Shepherd

I try to use my own bags when shopping, take wire hangers back to the cleaners and recycle the plastic bags. I also recycle plastic bottles, cans, cardboard and newspapers, magazines and mixed paper from mail & food lables. I use store plastic bags as trash bags.

  • Jess

My boyfriend moved in recently, an i converted all his old boxes into a cat scratching post… my kitties love it!

  • Pam

I buy green every chance I get and make my own earth and lung friendly household cleaners. I am reducing what I buy and using my own shopping bags and cart. I’ve been recycling everything that can be recycled by the city I live in and always use biodegradable “poop” bags cleaning up after my dog. I am keeping an old (1992) standard shift car with an EPA rating of 26mpg in town running clean.

  • joann

We are lucky to have curbside recycling, so this is a given for newspapers, plastic, aluminum, household mail, bottles. If we have a lot, my husband takes it to the transfer station. We are preparing for a move, so anything that can be used is donated to the local thrift shop (clothes, toys household items, drapes etc.). We trash very little and shred any personal papers. I also use cloth bags for any purchases. i am seriously avoiding any more “stuff”.

  • Kimberly

I already subscribe. I have cancelled most of my magazine subscriptions. It was amzing how many I would get in a month, most of which were only slightly flipped through. Such a waste!

Instead of buyiing bottled water all the time, I’m using those re-suable metal bottles. They actually make the water taste better and it stays cold for a long time.

I repurpose items rather than throwing them away and have joined my local freecycle group to find homes for things I no longer need lezanac@yahoo.com

  • chrissy

I always try to use things for any other purpose so I don’t have to throw away good products. I also recycle as muchas possible.

  • Merrie L.

I try repurposing things… aluminum (veggie) cans as pencil holders, toilet paper tubes as a holder for my hair bands, paper towel tubes as extention cord organizers, etc.

  • Katy M

I just learned how to re-pot cracked makeup (like blush and eyeshadow). It’s also cool to look for other containers I can repurpose for makeup pots! How cool to be able to get green and get beautiful at the same time! :)

  • Cindy Semrau

I started reusing all my paper ‘scraps’ and old magazines by letting the kids make collage mats for their artwork! Then we take digital photographs of them and recycle the paper! Triple use!

  • Kari D

My husband and I have decided to make a concentrated effort to be “greener” — not just for the environment, but for our health. We’ve stopped using chemical cleansers on our countertops (that stuff seeps into your skin and is BAD NEWS), and we’ve started a recycling program for our neighborhood.

Now, instead of everyone throwing away their newspapers, plastic items and aluminum cans, it all gets picked up and recycled instead of tossed in the trash.

  • Lily

I have been going through my clothes and refashioning things I have stopped wearing to make new things instead of going shopping so much!

  • cindy

I have always recycled aluminum but never thought about my paper plates until my sister brought it to my attention that I sometimes use those styrophoam things. Especially when they are on sale. So now I make it a point to only buy the paper ones!

  • Ron Miller

I really must admit we’re not doing any more then we were years ago, recycling plastic and aluminum containers, but that’s about it

  • peggie

I compost all of our veggie scraps for our garden, recycle all papers, boxes, cans and glass bottles. Stopped using our electric dryer and dry all of our clothes on a clothes line inside our garage and in our bathroom. Use low flow shower heads in our shower and low flow water valves on our sinks. I wash our clothes in cold water only and use non chlorine whitener to brighten our clothes.
I recycle all of our clothes giving them to friends in need and donating them to charities and thrift stores. I also purchase our clothes from thrift stores. It’s really the way to go. Not only do I save the clothes from ending up in the land fill but I am also saving a great deal of money by buying good looking clothing at a great price.I have purchased brand name clothing such as Banana Republic, Chico, Kenneth Cole and Aeropostale for just pennies of their original cost! for a few years now, I have been making sure lights are only on in the room we are in and even at that I burn candles at times too because we dont like it too well lit. I have been making sure my kids turn off lights and we have replaced our old light bulbs with flourescent ones which save a bunch of money and last a long time.
We unplug anything that isnt being used. Wash in cold water and I started wahing my dishes by hand in warm not hot water as well as drying them on air dry when I have to use my dishwasher instead of heated dry. They dry just as fast. Turn heat down when we are going to sleep and arent using the downstairs and they say its better to sleep in a little cooler environment so I keep the heat at 65 when we are sleeping but we are all warm and toasty with our covers. There are so many little things to do and so much to learn.

We started over a year ago “greening up our act” as an entire family & it has become not only a part of our everyday life now, but a cause we are passionate about! We have made so many changes to the way we life our life in order to have a healthier, greener home & be kind to the environment. Little changes like only using natural home cleaning products & laundry detergents. Using only natural & organic health & beauty products. Recycling anything & everything we possibly can. Watering our lawn & gardens using water pumped in from the lake, etc. It has been such a fulfilling journey!

  • karen

We garden organically and compost food and yard scraps. Thanks.

  • Erica C.

These are gorgeous items! They are right up my alley. We recycle here, and we’ve changed our light bulbs. We have also started a community group where we clean up the neighborhood once a week. It’s a nice group activity.

  • mashal

i am taking the train everywhere.. which i have never done before, especially since i have a heart condition :)

  • Sara

I think it is very important to incorporate a green way of living in your everyday life. How I am going green is just by re-using and recycling everyday items. For instance- cereal boxes and shoe boxes go to my boyfriends third grade classroom where he can use them for projects. All glass jars also go to his class room to hold supplies and help his class become more organized. All paper and plastic is recycled and of course we use our own bags at the grocery store. We are also working on making our home and vehicles more energy efficient. It will be nice when the weather is warm and I can ride my bike to work. Great for exercise and the environment :). If everyone makes simple changes, we can make a difference!

  • Evelyn

I have always recycled, reused, and made do with a little, growing up in a frugal household. When doing errands, combine as many things possible in one trip to save on gas. When shopping, check to see if the larger size of something you use is available, but always compare the unit for price per wt as this is not always cost saving. Buy items that will be needed down the road while they are onsale and try to use a coupon.

  • Lauren

My husband and I have started recycling our alkaline batteries at our local AERC, and our home remodeling leftovers such as nails, scrap metal and copper to another recycling spot nearby! We also took down wood plank from our basement celing and cut the m to size to re-use on our walls as wainscotting! A money/material saver and re-using feels great! Daily, we switched to cloth green-bags for groceries, and set up a recycling station on our porch. We carefully sort out our used cans, glass and plastics, newspapers, cardboard, magazines, ect. If its paper- in it goes!. even aluminum foil! We know its a small thing, but it feels good to do our part to reduce the junk in the landfills! This spring we are going to try to set up a compost pile next to our garden too, to reduce our organic trash and get some great fertilizer in return!!

We recycle whatever we can even though we do have to take everything to a recycling center ourselves. We watch our water and electricity consumption, waste as little as possible and also use what we have as long as it’s usable instead of going out and buying the next new thing as soon as it’s available.
