Pasta & Wine Will Do That To You: Italy’s Vogue Curvy, And 5 Reasons It Just Misses

Vogue Italia is apparently sick of being blamed by the fashion industry for featuring skinny models–and its response? A portion of its website is now supposed to be dedicated to something for women who actually know what love handles are:  Vogue Curvy. But after checking out the site, we started to realize it’s all a farce. Here, our 5 reasons why Vogue Curvy actually isn’t any different than its skinnier counterpart:

1. Advertisers still rule content. A seemingly helpful diagram of plus-size looks conveniently features at least one piece by Marina Rinaldi, an Italian plus-size designer. According to the big fat (pardon the pun) advertisement at the bottom of the screen, Marina Rinaldi is paying for the placement.

2. Vogue editors don’t have a clue  how to dress anyone over a size zero. An evening wear slideshow features boxy, shapeless dresses that does the opposite of celebrate curves–it hides them, and in effect, makes anyone (even size 0 models) look fatter.

3. It’s in another language. If you’re not a donna who’s taken at least high school Italiano, you can’t actually read anything.

4.  Lack of originality. Guess who their first “Plus Size Idol” is? That’s right: Christina Hendricks from Mad Men. Yawn.

5. It’s still a clique. Vogue Curvy is not a section in the magazine, it’s not even incorporated within the regular site. It’s sending the message that if you’re overweight, we’ve got something for you–we just don’t want it to mix with our skinny models.

We believe in looking your best at any size: see the dress that works for everyone, and how to dress for your body type, then check out our guides to dresses to hide your tummy but show off your curves, tops that hide your tummy, and Spanx swimwear.

Not sure if all of these are bad things. An advertiser sponsoring the section? Isn’t one of the common complaints that not as many designers make flattering clothes for a size 12+ market? If there’s one willing to take the plunge, perhaps it will encourage others. When was the last time you saw Gucci or Louis Vuitton clothes on someone larger than a size 4? Handbags? Eyeglasses? Those don’t even have anything to do with size, and you still won’t find advertisements anywhere near a “plus size” model.

As for the third point, in the top right there’s an option to read the site in English. No problemo. Plus, with the highly visual nature of fashion spreads, it may not be a huge barrier.

Finally, you have to scroll down on the homepage, but there’s content from Vogue Talents, Vogue Black and Vogue Curvy there. Would it be nice to feature them more prominently? Sure, but they’re not hidden that far away.

And the 6th reason Vogue Curvy misses the mark – where the hell are the plus sized models? One picture of Crystal Renn hardly counts for an entire webzine.

I wish ads were just geared more towards healthy living rather than women’s weight! Our family loves to eat whole healthy foods like Kamut Khorasan Wheat, quinoa, couscous and all kinds of fruits and vegetables. We do it though for health and not what the scales tell us!

One more reason it doesn’t work is that not all of the clothes are from plus size designers. One of the bloggers on twitter admitted that the clothing that she will be discussing isn’t for plus size girls at all. How does that help me?

Isn’t it odd; that Italian Vogue features stick thin models–when flesh and curves are de riguer in their society? Trust me on this ladies!!!Just ask any hot blooded Italian man…
