While I’ve never been a fan of counterfeit purses, this new project makes me secretly happy they exist. On July 11th at 11 a.m. EST, eBay Fashion Vault will release their collection of 50 designer totes which take a stand against counterfeit handbags. Designers include CFDA President Diane Von Furstenberg, Rodarte, Marchesa, Foley & Corinna, Phillip Lim and more (i.e. anyone who’s anyone in the fashion world right now). The purses cost between $35 and $150, and will be available via eBay’s “Buy It Now” function—so you won’t have to worry about sniping it at the end of the auction. Now this is some fashion activism we’re truly excited for.

I find this campaign so conceited. If I had the money I would buy all designer handbags (Marc Jacobs I love you), but I simply cannot. I bought at fake Chanel bag in San Francisco about four years ago, and it has held up great and it looks very real. I also own a lot of bags from Target and local stores that look great.

I believe fashion and style stem from everyday people. Though I agree that directly copying these companies’ designs is saddening and even unfair, perhaps the designer brands need to consider how to market to everyday people.

These designers DEFINITELY need to reconsider the message they give with these bags. “You can’t fake fashion” equates to “Money is fashion”. Fashion is not simply buying expensive items.

Life isn’t fair and not everyone can afford a pricey bag. That does not justify stealing. You can have style without ripping off a company that was fortunate enough to come up with an idea or design that can command top dollar. Designer brands don’t *have* to market to anyone they don’t wish to. If they would like to make more money in another market, they are free to do so. If they want to remain exclusive, they are also free to do so. Fake bags are counterfeit, and if you look up counterfeit in the dictionary you find: made in imitation so as to be passed off fraudulently or deceptively as genuine; not genuine; forged. That is stealing someone else’s idea, hard work, and reputation for personal gain. You can be influenced by a designer, but producing fakes is stealing, period.

You cant fake fashion does NOT equate to money is fashion, it simply means dont steal or support those who do.  Look up all the conterfeit items and what goes back behind them…  you might be surprised to learn this goes much farther than simply a handbag  & these designers and CFDA are just contributing to try and stop the over all selling of counterfit goods.

I totally get what you mean.
it is saddening that ppl are profiting from someone elses idea. but I think what the Designers are trying to say is that counterfeiting is wrong, not that fashion comes from expensive products. YCFF is a slogan, a simplified movement, so it’s easily miss interpreted.

I do however feel that all the brand name lovers are going to go out an buy this bag..to “rep” and it’s just another show of we’re rich and better.

Designers have been creating low end products like secondary labels and collaborating with target, h&m, gap…etc..
but the brand lovers buy it all up too fast for the regular people:(
Branching out to everyday people is smart, but it’s becoming gimmicky and exploitative… like it’s a way to get people hooked on name brand increasing profit margin. it is all about marketing and selling after all.

In the end the if you can’t afford it don’t buy it, look for a cheaper version but not counterfeit
