The 125 Best New Beauty Launches Of 2023

Did you ever wonder how celebs, bloggers and even regular girls, like you and I, get their eyeshadow to look so perfect? Yeah, so did I, until I finally just swallowed my pride and asked someone. Let me say, the perfectionist’s answer was not what I expected. When she revealed her eyeshadow secret, my jaw dropped. I have been wearing eyeshadow every day since my freshman year of high school (aka the past 9 years), and I had been doing it wrong the whole time!

Believe it or not, the best way to get two-toned shadow (one light shade with a darker shade in the crease) is to apply it with your eyes open. I wish I could say I discovered this trick myself, but a sorority sister shared it with me 4 years ago, and I haven’t done my eyeshadow the wrong way since. I owe every compliment I’ve ever received on my eye makeup to her. Are you fishing for compliments?

Follow these three steps:

1) Apply an eyeshadow primer to your eyes with them closed since this is the only way it will work. We like Smashbox 24 Hour Photo Finish Shadow Primer ($21) because it keeps your eyeshadow intact all day. Although we would never suggest leaving your makeup on for that long, sometimes a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do.

2) With one of your eyes closed and the other open (so you can see, duh), use a makeup brush to apply a light shade (like gold, nude or a light pink) to your eyelid. Then, repeat this step on the other eye.

Now, here is where you’ve been messing up…

3) To apply the darker shade (brown, tan or black) to your creases, keep your eyes open. Simply brush the darker shadow shade into your creases and repeat on the other eye. Keeping your eyes open the whole time will allow you to compare the shadow on both of your eyes and get them to look identical every time. The shape of your eyes is alot easier to follow and trace when your peepers are open. Your makeup will look more natural, I promise.
