I honestly don’t think there’s a way I could survive the entire day without applying lip balm. The feeling of dry, chapped lips is horrible,  but luckily lip balm solves that issue. Let’s be honest, there’s no real science to applying lip balm, but there is one thing you should keep in mind before applying anything to your lips.

Certain lip balms contain ingredients like menthol and phenol, which aren’t exactly good for your lips. Why? These ingredients may soothe at the start but they can cause your lips to dry out quickly, which leads to reapplication.

“You have to apply more, and it becomes a vicious cycle,” Dr. Melissa Piliang, a dermatologist, said. “Sometimes these cause a tingling feeling when you apply them. They either cause irritation or remove outer layers of the skin. They’re an exfoliant. Then you have less protection, and you’re more susceptible to environmental factors, so you have to apply more product. Avoid lip balms that contain those ingredients.”

So, the one thing you should consider when applying lip balm is its ingredients.
