The 125 Best New Beauty Launches Of 2023

Mischa Barton and Jessica Simpson grace the pink cover of my favorite artifact from 2005, Teen People’s Celebrity Beauty Guide. I’d read and re-read it obsessively, memorizing the ingredients in Mandy Moore’s facial scrub and the steps in Ashanti’s eye shadow routine. It was my first foray in the world of makeup, one that has become much more stressful and much less fun in the 11 years since. Though I no longer cite Ashanti as my eye makeup muse, the book did teach me some very important things.

The greatest help to me was the section on letting your eye makeup complement your eye shape/type. And okay, I still don’t really know what it means to have hooded eyes (nor if I actually have them), but that section was still probably the most informative reading I did that year (I was 12, so the book had only my third reading of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants to compare with).

One of the major takeaways addressed how to line small eyes. Do I have small eyes? Still not really sure, but I’m not opposed to making them look bigger. The one thing they advised was not to line more than the outer three-quarters of your lower lash line — NEVER the entire eye. Suffice to say, I have faithfully upheld this rule since 2005. I doubt I’m alone in this, the rule was  pretty well-known in the Sephora community.

But guess what? The rules have changed. Now, it’s okay to line your entire lower lash line, as long as it isn’t with a dark color. Experts suggest a white or nude shade (or blue if you’re feelin’ wild) which will really make them pop, regardless of their size and shape. Additionally, you can take things a step further and actually apply mascara to the lower lashes! Don’t go overboard, just use whatever is left on the mascara wander after you’ve coated your upper lash line.
