The heat this summer was brutal, and sometimes my apartment’s A/C just didn’t cut it. So whenever I needed a quick cool down, I would take a shower. I would feel so cold right after getting out, even if my apartment was over 80 degrees! Turns out, there’s actually science behind why you feel so cold after taking a shower.
It’s evaporation! OK, try to stay with me because I’m about to get a little technical. When you step out of a steamy shower, the water on your body starts to evaporate. You go from being in an extremely humid environment to one that is not so much, which is why evaporation happens. To change into gas and evaporate, the water on your body needs heat energy, which comes from your surroundings (aka, hot, steamy shower). Also, the water absorbs heat from your skin to help evaporate, making you even colder! Did you follow? Great, so that’s why you feel like an icicle everytime you step out of the shower, no matter how hot the bathroom may be.
