An Eco-Chic Sweater Made Only From Bah, Bah, Black Sheep
January 23, 2008
What: Black Sheep Sweaters, $114
Why: Ever feel like the black sheep in your family? Here's a way to make your feelings known without looking like an outcast. These eco-friendly crewneck sweaters are made of 100% black sheep wool sheared from organically raised sheep in the heart of Ireland. No funky artificial treatments on the wool, no inhumane animal treatment–just a bunch of happy, fleecy creatures producing sweaters that will keep an eco-chic fashionista warm.
Now here's the catch–this is the real deal, so the sweaters have a certain wooly smell to them and feel a little itchier than the chemically treated versions you probably own from department stores. We don't see the rough texture as a problem, since we don't normally go about wearing wool sweaters with nothing underneath (just layer with a long-sleeve tee to shield skin and get some extra warmth). As for the scent, we actually like its natural odor–makes us feel like some Irish farmer roving the fields and drinking Guinness.
And there's another plus–although these sweaters were initially designed for men, women loved them so much they created smaller sizes for the gals. If you're a size 4 or less, go for the extra small; if you're in the 6 to 10 range, aim for the small. Or just get a larger one that fits the man in your life and then steal it whenever you're in the mood to cozy up in something oversized and warm.
