Go Vertical and look thinner

A single vertical line in the middle of a garment will make you look thinner.

A pair of pants - like these YA-YA gray stripe 'Long & Lean' pants - with a pintucked seam down the middle of the leg. A vertical pintuck will make your legs look thinner. The pintuck up the back of the leg and tush will also make your butt look narrower, too. Score!

All is takes is a vertical line down the center of a sweater - like on this cardigan by Marc Jacobs icon- to make you look slimmer.

An inverted pleat vertically slices a skirt in half, which will make you look slimmer when you wear it. The diagonal seaming at the waist, also called a yoke, on this skirt by Façonnable iconcreates a slimming effect as well.

Don Diagonal for long and lean

Any lines that go on a diagonal create a long, lean look.

Look thinner in diagonals by choosing a blouse with a diagonal, or mitred stripe. This blouse from Craig Taylor iconis a great choice for anyone who is short-waisted or has a large chest.

The diagonal lines on this skirt by Nanette Lepore will create a slimming effect where most of us wish we were slimmer, our thighs.

The diagonal placement of these pockets on these pants by Theory iconcreates a slimming effect in the hip area.

Take It Wide to hide thighs

To counterbalance a wide hip or larger thighs, create width at your neck or at your hem. As you can see in these images, the woman's hip area on the left looks narrower than the woman's hip on the right. This is why halter tops are no-no's for wide-thighed gals.

To balance your wide hips and thighs choose a wide boat-neck top like this James Perse Boatneck Jersey Top.

The fit and flare style of this skirt by Tracy Reese will camouflage a larger hip. Because the hem flares it has a counterbalancing effect.

The narrower knee and wider hem bootcut pants by Marc by Marc Jacobs can balance a wider hip and create the ultimate optical illusion.

Keep It Close Together for a slimmer look

The closer your pinstripes are to each other, the slimmer you will look.

This shirt by Catherine Malandrino has so many optical illusions going on that it will be sure to fool anyone's eye. First, the close-set stripes are very slimming. The diagonal lines also create a slimming effect and, when diagonal stripes widen at the shoulder, like they do on this shirt, your thighs will look narrower.

Want to look longer, leaner, taller and thinner? Check out this pinstripe suit by Dolce & Gabbana. Not only does the cut of this suit create a long look, but the close-set vertical pinstripe will give you a slimmer look as well.

The closer-placed pinstripes on these pants from Anne Klein will make you look tall and thin.
