Balenciaga Is Suing Steve Madden For Confusing Customers With A Lookalike Bag
May 29, 2014
You probably recognize Balenciaga‘s Motorcycle bag from the arms of celebs like Sienna Miller, Kim Kardashian and Diane Kruger. It’s one of those classic designer items we’ve been drooling over (and dreaming about owning) for years. So just when we get an under-$90 lookalike from Steve Madden, the folks over at Balenciaga are trying to take it away from us. That’s right, the French fashion house is suing the American brand for its “studied copy” of the iconic bag.
Apparently, Balenciaga thinks the Btalia Bag ($88) was designed specifically to confuse customers into thinking it’s the Motorcycle Bag.Um, can you give us a little more credit, Balenciaga? I think we can tell the difference between a high-end designer bag and a knockoff (it’s kind of our thing). Balenciaga claims that the similarities between the bags include, “The flat pouch with a zippered rectangular closure, a zipper pull consisting of a strip centrally-knotted and hanging in two equal lengths, and a semi-elliptical patch outfitted with two raised studs in each corner; and two identical patches in an elongated pentagonal shape, featuring an elongated hexagonal patch outfitted with a buckle and two raised studs.”
The Steve Madden bag is still available to shop…for now. In the lawsuit filled last week, Balenciaga asked Madden to stop producing the bag at issue AND compensate them for any lost profits. Oh, and in case you were wondering, these two actually have a history of battling it out in court. Back in 2009, Balenciaga and Steve Madden got into it over shoes that look like Legos. Yep.
