Good Question:  What Is Proper Office Attire for Summer?

Jul 11, 2005

With standards of office attire becoming more relaxed, it’s getting harder to navigate the rules of Business Casual and Casual Fridays, especially during the skin-baring summer months.  That sundress you wore with your sequined flip-flops may have looked stunning at Sunday brunch, but can it make your commute come Monday morning?  Stay on top of what’s office appropriate with these 9-to-5 guidelines:

* No matter how laid-back your office may be, fashion and business experts agree that mini-skirts, flip-flops, halter tops, sundresses, and strapless tops are all office no-no’s.
* Steer clear of cleavage-baring necklines, too-tight pants, or skirts that ride all the way up whenever you sit down.  Just because you’ve got it doesn’t mean you should flaunt it at the office.  Save your sexy clothes for the weekend.
* Going out after work?  Cover up tight tanks and camis with a cardigan or tailored blazer during office-hours.
* If your office is casual enough to allow t-shirts and jeans, make sure yours are in good taste.  Can you wear a Basic-T from the Gap?  Yes.  The worn out Radiohead t-shirt you’ve had since college?  No.

Above all, use common sense along with your creativity.  Express your own style while staying within the company’s overall aesthetic.  Your superiors will be as impressed with your dress smarts as they are with your performance.
