Why: I’ve been not finishing beauty products forever. I know, I'm supposed to throw things away every few months anyway, but usually stuff just stays around until I realize it’s been the better part of a decade and toss it. Of course, sometimes I get bored, and sometimes there's a new version of whatever I already have that I just have to have, in which case its predecessor gets the boot.

Not true for philosophy's Hope in a Jar face cream. I bought it in the winter of 2006 when I wandered into Sephora, dry and flaky and desperate for something that would stop my face from hurting when I smiled. A kind saleswoman led me to this rich salve – that smells just like a massage room at the spa – and I've been using it on my dry-ish skin ever since: winter, summer, and in between. It works wonders during winter and sunburn season when my skin is completely parched, but doesn’t make my face the least bit greasy if I use it when I’m just a little dry. The best part is: you can more than justify the cost with the simple fact that it takes a dab, a dot, a tiny bit to do its moisturizing stuff. I should know; I've had mine for two years.
