She Has Endometriosis

To us, Julianne Hough is the vision of health. But behind-the-scenes, she's battling endometriosis, a disorder in which tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside the uterus and can be very painful. Hough says that she started noticing the symptoms when she was around 15 or 16, but never got a proper diagnosis until her dancing days on DWTS

“I went to the E.R. [after a performance] because it was such a pain that was so debilitating. For the first few days, we were trying to figure out what it was because I wasn’t sure that it was endometriosis at that time, but this pain that I’ve been feeling isn’t normal," she recalls. "So, we're checking everything and finally one doctor was like, ‘I think it’s endometriosis’ and I ended up – and this is different for everybody – but my doctor recommended that I have surgery for it at the time. So, I went right in and then a week later I was dancing again!”

She's Spreading Awareness With #MeInEndo

Since Hough knows how painful endometriosis can be, she's spreading awareness for the disorder with Get in the Know about ME In EndoMEtriosisa women’s health campaign dedicated to inspiring women to learn about and better understand endometriosis.

"This is such a great campaign because 10 years ago, there was no website or information that I could go look at that was easy to understand," she explains. "So, just to have that information at hand for women and young women who have been going through it for years... it’s basically just starting a conversation. I love that there’s a community with using #MeInEndo and that people are able to tell their stories. It puts a face to the pain. It gives it a name."

Her Story Helped Her Sisters Find Out They Had Endometriosis, Too!

Hough's work with #MEInEndo has impacted so many lives, including her two sisters. She revealed that being open about her struggle to find a diagnosis helped her two sisters and her mom realize that they had endometriosis, too!

"And at first, I would read [messages from my fans] and think about it, and then I realized, 'You know what? I helped two out of my three sisters' – two of my sisters found out they had endometriosis, my mom who had it for years, a couple of my friends – 'if that was just me without being vocal about it, imagine how much I could do if I did talk about it,'" she says of what sparked her interest in joining Get in the Know about ME in EndoMEtriosis.

She Never Leaves The House Without...

"My go-to products are my eyebrow pencil. I mean, I never leave the house without filling in my brows," she dishes. “A lot of people don’t know this, but I’ll have a [clear] lip balm on and then whatever is left on my finger, I’ll put on my cheekbones. It’s very dewy and gives you that sort of natural glow and highlight. That’s sort of my little trick!”

Drinking water! "One thing every woman should know is water, water, water, water! I mean, not just for, you know, hydration, but also for your skin, and your sleep, and getting rid of colds and everything," she says.
