Eating a protein-packed breakfast is an excellent way to ensure you are getting energy to fuel your morning and your workout. But some protein-rich foods closely resemble other foods that aren't as healthy to eat. One of the most common food mistakes we make is one involving a protein you shouldn't eat before 10am.

Sweetened And Flavored Yogurt

We've heard so much about the benefits of probiotics found in yogurt and how this live "good" bacteria can kill harmful bacteria in our gut. To boot: yogurt is a protein-filled food that is low in calories and sugar — except, that is, when you're talking about pre-sweetened, flavored yogurt.

Sweetened yogurt with the fruit at the bottom or that comes pre-mixed and tastes a little like ice-cream can contain, on average, 15 grams of sugar. Some have as much as over 30 grams of sugar per cup (the American Heart Association recommends that women consume no more than 25 grams of added sugar each day).

And when it comes to choosing foods based on protein, most regular yogurts contain no more than 9 or 10 grams of protein. Considering how the sugar content will make your blood sugar levels spike and then plummet, the protein gains aren't enough to make it worth it.

Choose Plain Greek Yogurt Instead

Compared to flavored yogurt, plain Green yogurt contains a wealth of protein — 15 to 20 grams per 6-ounce container — and has about half the amount of sugar. Choosing low-fat Greek yogurt and then jazzing it up with flavorful pomegranates, berries, almonds, and natural granola is one way to both enjoy your breakfast and reap the many benefits of this high-protein food.
