If you’re pulling up to a fast food restaurant, it’s likely you’re not expecting an especially nutritious meal or the most sanitary environment around. Because, let’s be honest: no one is going to McDonald’s because it’s healthy. However, you probably still have some sort of standards when it comes to what you’re putting into your body, which is why it’s always helpful—and enlightening—to hear about what goes on behind closed doors, straight from the mouths (or keyboards) of employees.

If you browse the internet, you’ll find many warnings from fast food workers about what goes into the food and how it’s made, and the truth can certainly be shocking at times. When it comes to McDonald’s, one employee on Reddit spilled the beans on one especially “dirty” type of beverage sold at the restaurant: their McCafe drinks!

The Coffee Machine May Not Be Cleaned Frequently

One thread on Reddit asked a question we're all dying to know the answer to: "Fast food workers of Reddit, what should we NOT order at your restaurant? Why not?" The response from a McDonald's employee was frankly shocking to us. Rather than warning against the fattening burgers or fries, they said to steer clear of the McCafe drinks containing coffee. Why? Because the machines are not as clean as you may hope.

"I work for McDonald's and make sure everyone that matters to me never orders anything that comes out of the 'McCafe' machine," this user wrote, noting that the machines "are routinely neglected in practically all the McDonalds." Yikes!

The commenter says improper training and management is to blame for the unsanitary coffee machine practices. "Not only are staff not properly trained in its cleaning and maintenance, at almost every McDonalds I’ve had experience with, the managers in charge of training them don’t know f--- all either..."

And the stuff leftover in those uncleaned machines sounds like it would make our skin crawl. "All McCafe beverages run through a horrifically dirty machine," the user continued. "We’re talking 5+ inches of uncleaned, liquid bullsh-t making up its inside parts."

That does sound pretty nasty—but, honestly, we're going to bet that a lot of coffee machines aren't cleaned as often as they should be, even in people's homes. So we'll withhold judgement if you want to keep guzzling hot coffee from McDonald's. Sometimes you just need the caffeine boost, despite your best judgement. But if you happen to be a germaphobe, now you have one less reason to love those golden arches.
