Faces Take A Minimalist Backseat To Daring Dresses At The SAGs
January 26, 2009
Thank you, SAG attendees, for ditching boring black for once! This year, colorful dresses were the real stars of the SAG Red Carpet. And since no star likes to be upstaged, hair and makeup were pretty minimalist (all the better to show off those cobalt, magenta, and emerald frocks). The good news for those of us who want to emulate our Red Carpet faves? Minimalist makeup and hair are a cinch to replicate.
Kate Winslet, Claire Danes, and newcomer Freida Pinto all chose to take it easy on the makeup, opting for classic smoky eyes and pinky/neutral lips with just a hint of shimmer. Get screwup-proof smoky eyes with Bare Escentuals Smoky "V" Eyes Tutorials ($32), a kit that comes with two complementary shadows, step-by-step instructions, and the brushes you need to get the job done. Finish the look with a lip color that won't outshine your outfit. We like Korres Guava Lipstick in Nude ($22) and Lancome Color Fever gloss in Solaire ($25) for a slightly glossier look.
Straight sheen is super easy to copy at home, regardless of hair length or thickness. Just blow dry with a big ol' paddle brush, like the boar and nylon bristled iTech Magnetic paddle ($20). Then, fire up a flat iron like Linea's C2 Digital ($200), and slick on a good shine serum. Garnier Fructis Style Brilliantine Glisten Drops ($5) offer up hair bling on a budget.
While these minimal looks are clean, pretty, and re-creatable, they did lead to a few misses. Penelope Cruz, while on trend with the smoky eyes and nude lip, overdid it with way too much inky liquid liner and a too-dark outline on otherwise bare lips. And America Ferrara (who we bet will get dinged for her dress, too) had healthy looking hair pulled into a messy side pony that had a distinctly post-gym vibe.
And stay tuned for our review of last night's Red Carpet fashion.
