One Dress, Four Ways: If Michelle Obama Can Do It, So Can You
February 4, 2010
Michelle Obama has an uncanny ability to relentlessly pull one great outfit after the next from her White House closet, like at this morning’s prayer breakfast, when she re-wore a purple Narciso Rodriguez dress with a cardigan underneath (see photos below).
Observe the rules of Obama style: After poring through her outfits, this woman knows how to layer and how to recycle. She also knows what her best colors are and works her wardrobe around that palette. Even more importantly, she choose a few core cuts that flatter her body. From there, everything just falls into place, over, and over, and over….
Shop in the same color palette to create easily interchangeable ensembles. A dress can easily go from summer to winter with a like-colored tissue-weight, long-sleeve tee underneath, like this one, for under $10.
Add a brooch, like this turquoise one, to change a plain dress into something special.
Buy cardigans. Lots of them. They work in every length, and every color, with every outfit. We’re partial to these: wear the Banana Republic lavender cardigan with black, blue, or other neutrals, and this yellow Vince cardigan, which looks really fresh with gray or khaki dresses.
Pick one standout item, like a wide belt with a unique pattern, that can be used to accent everything.
