Fashion’s Night Out Will Indeed Return, But This Time On A Friday

fashion's night out 2009

So the style masterminds behind Fashion’s Night Out  – some pictured above – have opted to move next year’s celebration to Friday, September 10th in an effort to maximize participation. We are all for this idea. While 2009’s Thursday evening fiesta was everything we’d hoped for, free drinks, small bites, and celebrity sightings are so much more fun when you don’t have to wake up for work in the morning.

In honor of this FNO announcement, how about treating yourself to an Anna Wintour-esque printed sheath? After all, she’s obviously the woman in charge (even Mike Bloomberg can’t wield her Vogue authority). We’ve got some good ideas:

David Meister knit printed sheath dresssue wong floral embroidered dress

David Meister’s show-stopping, knit sheath will look super slick with some black opaque tights and patent pumps, while Sue Wong’s floral-embroidered dress features a sleek fit and sexy v-neckline. For more in the way of fashionable frocks, check out our guides to sheaths and shirt dresses.

Take A Good Look At December’s Vogue Without Heading To The Newsstand

We’re as enamored as ever of Grace Coddington, Anna Wintour’s creative counterpart at Vogue.  According to the creative director, Lady Gaga “turned up completely naked under a white rubber raincoat” to be shot for their December issue.  Check out the video to hear unflappable Grace relay that tidbit.

Lady Gaga in December Vogue

Lady Gaga’s spread for the magazine was Hansel and Gretel themed, also starred British model Lily Cole, and was shot by Annie Leibovitz.  Doesn’t it make crawling into an oven look like going to the circus?

Cate Blanchett in December Vogue

Cate Blanchett is the issue’s coverlady (we just can’t bear to call her a “covergirl”) and inside the magazine, she calls herself a theater geek and talks about not being either “cautious or careful” when it comes to career choices.  And of course, her incredible editorial spread just makes us her seem even more inspiring.

Between Gaga, Lily, and Cate, somehow my hankering for pale and unusual frocks just tripled. I’ll cop a more casual version of Cate’s glittery Vogue look with Free People’s white gold sequin slip dress.  I also like the laney dress from Cynthia Steffe; it retains the fluffy detail of dresses worn by Lady Gaga and Lily Cole in their fairy-tale themed shoot, while being quite a bit more wearable for a non-pop star/non-model.

Now, what to pair with a winter white dress?  We’d recommend an evening bag and your best faux fur for the ultimate fun, luxurious look.

Anna Wintour Moves In On Washington

anna wintourmichelle obama vogue

Anna Wintour has been selected to join the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities; sounds pretty official right? Apparently, the oh-so-lovable editor-in-chief charmed the Obamas when the First Lady graced the cover of Vogue back in March. Along with celebs like Sarah Jessica Parker and Edward Norton, Wintour will advise the President on how to “expand the role of arts in society,” WWD reported today.

Wintour may have turned 6o yesterday (happy belated, Anna) but she still looks great. Get her shimmery look with a slightly less shiny sheath by Shoshanna and Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent’s glittery wool cardigan.

If you like those picks, we think you’ll love our guides to the best in cocktail dresses and faux fur.

If It’s Way Too Cold For A Slutty Nurse Costume, Try An Anna Wintour Get-Up Instead

If you really want to scare the kiddies, consider dressing up like Anna Wintour this year.

brown flip wig

Chances are you’ve already got the floral sheath and oversized sunglasses, so simply throw on some faux fur and pearls, and pick out an impeccably bobbed wig for a truly devilish get up.  To complete your Anna imitation, remember to look miserable and unsatisfied all night long.

While Wintour would love these pieces, they’re almost too nice to wear out on Halloween. We suggest pairing this pretty floral dress for fall with a plush faux fur jacket like this style from Diesel.

We’re not quite sure how to slut-ify an Anna Wintour outfit (there’s nothing sexy about how she bossed around her staff in The September Issue) but we’ve got some pretty funny slutty costume ideas of our own.

News: London Fashion Week Stays Weird, Vogue Editors Stay Home, And More

london fashion week stays strange

1. London Fashion Week may be making a comeback, but it’s as wacky as ever, with horned shoulders, hairy clothing, and more.  Anna Wintour deigned to attend this year; we wonder if there’s anything showing up that’s her style.  [Guardian]

2. Speaking of Anna Wintour, McKinsey must still be in action over at Vogue, as editors there are splitting up attendance at Milan and Paris fashion weeks, rather than all going.  If you’re on an editor-style-budget, we’d recommend a good pair of affordable slacks. [The Cut]

3. According to a recent survey, 52% of high-end goods consumers considered a luxury brand that also marketed items for mass consumption as no longer being a luxury brand.  Oh really now, why can’t we just have both?  [WWD]

4. Louis Vuitton may have won against eBay, but the luxury retailer lost its battle against Google to keep search engines from using its brand names.  Forget the search engines – we make it easy to find the best designer goods. [Telegraph]

A SheFinds Field Trip To The September Issue

The September Issue opened in New York theaters today, and this morning our lucky staff packed up and left the office to check out the documentary. We saw the necklace Anna Wintour wore more than once (and we still can’t figure out who made it) and got a good look at all her outfits.  Indeed, florals reign supreme in the Vogue household.

Grace Coddington and Anna Wintour

We really love R.J. Cutler, the documentary’s director, for having the nerve to face Anna, Grace Coddington, et al. to make this film.  He even had a sense of humor about it, so more props to him.

In case seeing The September Issue just isn’t enough Anna for you, be sure to check out her appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, if you haven’t already.  And if you’ve got tickets to the film but still need to get in the mood for some serious fashion, the trailer will be sure to do the trick:

Fashion’s Night Out: Shopping Will Be Fun Again

Anna Wintour and Vogue, the CFDA, and New York & Co. are encouraging New Yorkers to go shopping by sponsoring Fashion’s Night Out on September 10. Stores will stay open late, there’ll be parties and model appearances, and (hopefully) the drinks will be flowing. In case you live in New York or will be around on the 10th, get excited. Here are the events we recommend you scurry to after work on this new biggest shopping day of the year:

1. One of our favorite designers for edgy fall looks, Rag & Bone, will turn their SoHo store into an Irish Pub for the night – and they’ll be giving out free beer to thirsty shoppers.

2. Shop with the likes of Narciso Rodriguez and man of the moment, Alexander Wang, at the Barney’s flagship on Madison. The store is also offering free knitting classes and will host a “sewing circle” if you want to take matters into your own hands.

3. Check out Tory Burch’s meatpacking district boutique; she’ll be hosting a block party outside her store. The chic Mexican restaurant La Esquina will be providing barbecue while DJ Cassidy will supply the music.

4. Join Rebecca Taylor for candy and cocktails at her store on Mott Street – she’s offering a gift with every purchase and $100 off every $350 spent on her Fall/Winter collection.

For more info check out this video detailing all the fun and be sure to follow Fashion’s Night Out on twitter.

Of course, we’d recommend checking out Anna Wintour in The September Issue no matter where you live. It opens in New York on August 28th and everywhere else on September 11th.

The September Issue Screening: Bloggers Meet Director

rj cutler pre september issue screening

RJ Cutler answered questions last night at an advance screening of The September Issue at the Bryant Park Hotel. (Anna Wintour, shown with Cutler above, was unfortunately not there.)

He was funny, making jokes about refusing to be a fly on the wall while shooting at Vogue and noting that indeed, this cut of the documentary was exactly what he wanted – Anna’s hand did not edit.  And apparently, she understood the importance of this from the beginning of the project.

champagne at the september issue

Along with pink Champagne, there was popcorn, an item we can’t imagine the slender Wintour would ever approve.  Luckily, she wasn’t there to wag a thin finger at us.

The documentary opens on August 28th in New York and September 11th elsewhere; check out the trailer:

1. Despite Anna Wintour’s critiscm of Sienna Miller’s appearance, who appears in The September Issue, the actress seems to have forgiven the editor by appearing with her at a screening of the documentary.  The film, which opens in New York on Aug. 28, certainly has garnered a lot of gossip.  [Daily Mail]

2. Classic outdoor outfitter L.L. Bean is updating its look with a new collection, L.L. Bean Signature.  The line debuts in March, so stay suited up for the outdoors until then with a pair of solid fall boots. [NYT]

3. WWD reports on the top beauty brands purchased, with Clinique leading in the prestige category and Olay winning for mass market.  For more top picks, check out beauty guides that narrow it all down.  [WWD]

4. Eight British designers, including Stella McCartney, will redesign hospital gowns to auction off as a benefit for the Teenage Cancer Trust.  If you’re not planning a hospital stay anytime soon, get into the designer spirit with celebrity dresses. [The Guardian]

News: Vogue On Twitter, L’Oreal Creates Lash-Growing Serum, And More

1. There will be a live Twitter chat today at 5 pm EST with The September Issue director RJ Cutler (follow at http://twitter.com/septemberissue.)  For more of an inside scoop on what happens behind Vogue’s closed doors, check out The September Issue. [Facebook]

2. L’Oreal claims it has invented a serum to make lashes grow for a longer period of time before they fall out, thus resulting in longer eyelashes.  We’d like this to be a real, FDA-approved product, but in case it turns out to be of the snake oil variety, we’ll stick with the best mascara we know and love.  [Daily Mail UK]

3. Sewing machine manufacturer Tesco reported that its sales have risen 198% since this point last year, as people are spurred by the recession to make their own clothes.  In case you haven’t turned into a master seamstress just yet, don’t worry, because we’ve got you covered for all the best new fall styles.  [The Guardian]

4. In June it was widely reported that Vera Wang was a strong potential candidate to appear on Dancing With The Stars.  Alas, it’s not true, so we’ll just have to get our fill of Ms. Wang at sample sales.  [The Cut]
