The One Thing You Should Never Buy On Black Friday, According To A Shopping Expert

How To Come Out On Top On Black Friday And Cyber Monday

Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become two of the most important shopping days of the season for anyone looking to save some money and finish their holiday shopping early. And while the deals are very good (your bank account will thank you), it's not alwats easy to come out on top these days. Many ambitious and organized shoppers have had their butts handed to them on Black Friday (sometimes literally) because they made simple mistakes like looking for the wrong deals or not having a backup plan. Since it's such a thin line between #winning Black Friday and getting trampled by a crowd, we've outlined some tips for getting what you want this year and not being left empty-handed. First, we outlined exactly what to buy when, and now we've gone ahead and put all our CEO and online shopping expert Michelle Madhok's best tips in one place. We want to make sure you are well prepared for these two chaotic days. Tips for shopping Black Friday sales in store:                                                                                              Tip: Prepare, prepare, prepare: Do a lot of research on which stores will be carrying what. Going to Best Buy for a TV might seem like the most obvious choice, but it may not be the cheapest. Tip: Look over every Black Friday circular and Cyber Monday ad to compare prices. Then you’ll know which stores are offering the best deals on each product. Check sites like BlackFriday.com and BFAds.net Tip: Download apps that will help make Black Friday shopping easier for you. There are apps that will help you find the best route to your store and alert you when the stores you're at are having special deals and coupons. Tip: Clip store coupons for additional Black Friday savings. Tip: Compare prices with sites like PriceGrabber.com. Tip: Aim for big ticket items. 70% off a TV is worth more than 70% off a pair of gloves. Tip: Make sure you know what comes with the products you plan to buy. Sometimes prices are really low because a product comes stripped of the things it needs to function properly, which will ultimately result in you having to purchase those items separately. This tends to happen with low priced computer printers—you'll get the actual printer for what seems like a great deal, but then you'll have to shell out for ink and a cable. Tip: Know the layout of the store you plan to shop at. This will prevent you from wasting time looking for the department you need to get to. Tip: Get to your store way ahead of time. Quite a few stores will be beginning their Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving day—if your store is opening at 6pm, get there at least an hour ahead of time. Tip: The early bird catches the worm. This applies to grabbing door-buster deals. The quantities aren’t endless—in fact, some stores will only have a couple units of the door-busters they advertise in their flyer. So if you were hoping to grab that one big ticket item, getting there an hour ahead of time is not enough—get there hours ahead of time. It might mean putting off the turkey till Friday evening, but it's something to really consider. Tip: There will likely be a line at the big Black Friday stores like Best Buy, Target, and Walmart. Get on that line and be kind. Even form an alliance with your line neighbor if you can. She might be there for a food processor, while you’re hoping to score headphones. Strike a deal that’ll benefit you both. If she sees your Beats by Dre, she’ll grab em, and if you see the Cuisinart she wants, you’ll pick it up. Tip: Instead of running around town like a chicken without a head, try to shop at one store while getting the best deals with price matching. Larger department stores will usually match the prices of their competitors, just make sure to bring proof and know that not every item is applicable. Tip: Know the return policy. Some sale items may be final sale, and some stores might have a very small window to make returns. Tips for shopping Black Friday and Cyber Monday online: Tip: Use a fast browser like Google Chrome. Tip: Make sure whatever you buy is in stock and guaranteed for Christmas delivery, or you might be stuck handing out IOU’s on Dec 25th. Tip: Sign-up for email newsletters and follow your favorite retailers on Twitter and Facebook. Some sites frequently give subscribers early access to sales and additional discounts . Tip: Familiarize yourself with shopping search engines. Use comparison engines that specialize in categories like ShopStyle and Bizrate. Tip: Set up an autofill tool for your credit card and shipping address now. You can set up tools like RoboForm to remember your passwords to your favorite sites and also fill in shipping addresses to various places. Tip: Shop from the bottom up. Hit view all and then shop from the bottom of the sales page to the top. Everyone else will be shopping top down, and things at the top will sell out faster. Tip: Don’t let anything linger in your shopping cart for too long. Some sites will dump non-purchased goods back into inventory after 10 minutes or so. Tip: Grab promo codes by visiting sites like RetailMeNot or googling the names of shopping sites with the words 'coupon code'. Tip: Earn cash back on purchases with sites like Ebates and Hoopla Doopla. (Tip: Online shopping can save time and with free shipping, easy comparison-shopping, and the high cost of gas, it could save you money as well. For free shipping coupons, go to FreesShipping.org. Also keep in mind that some stores offer online purchase with in-store pickup, so search their policies or call customer service to find out. )

Amazon’s Black Friday Site Is Already Live And Full Of Savings

Good news: you don't have to wait until Black Friday to shop at Amazon! Why? Amazon's Black Friday site is already up-and-running, almost a month before Black Friday, which is on November 27 this year. Amazon is referring to the deals site as the "countdown to Black Friday." The company states on the site, "Black Friday 2015 is almost here, but we didn't want you to wait until the day after Thanksgiving for Black Friday deals, so we kicked off the savings a little early. We are counting down to the big day with even more deals, all day, every day. You'll find Amazon's fantastic early Black Friday sales right here." If you're an Amazon Prime member the deals are even better! Prime members get slightly early access to fantastic lightning deals. This Year’s Holiday Prices Could Be At A Record Low

Wal-Mart pretty much stunned investors with their latest earnings forecast, and not in a good way. The mega retailer's stock plummeted 10% and its shares prices are down by 29% for the year. Yikes. What does this all mean? A "price war" could be happening in the very near future. By the time the holidays roll around, perhaps sooner, Wal-Mart may be going head-to-head with the Internet's biggest retailer, Amazon. A bunch of experts believe Amazon could be to blame for Wal-Mart's latest plummet. NBC's Tom Costello says to expect more sales, serious price cuts and bargain deals. Basically, Wal-Mart is going to try anything to get customers to spend their money there rather than Amazon. This means your Black Friday deals just got even better...if that's at all possible. You might want to hold off on your holiday shopping because prices are expected to drop even further. Watch the video below for more info. What Our Readers Bought On Black Friday: The Best Deals On UGG, TOMS, More

Did you go shopping on Black Friday? Even if you didn't, we compiled a list of some the top picks that were sold on one of the most anticipated shopping events of the year. The fact that so many people purchased these items means that they're likely on a few holiday wish lists, which makes your gift shopping way easier. So what did everyone end up buying on Black Friday? Boots and booties. Lots of them. Most specifically UGGs, which never seem to not be a bestseller during the winter months, especially when on sale. Hunter boots (with a good deal like under a $100 price tag) were also a popular choice, along with skinny jeans by Gap, who managed to slash their online prices by half, and Old Navy V-neck sweaters for men at just 10 bucks. (Looks like we know what we're getting the men in our lives for the holidays.) Check out our slideshow now and act fast on swiping these holiday bestsellers, they just might sell out very soon. What The SHEfinds Staffers Bought On Black Friday/Cyber Monday

The SHEfinds staff pretty much owned Black Friday/Cyber Monday. What can we say? Online shopping is our jam and these are the two biggest days to do it. Some of us used the sales as a jump start on holiday shopping (which is the smart thing to do), while the rest of us treated ourselves. How could we not when deals like this literally only come around once a year?? Click the slideshow to see what we bought and let us know what you scored this weekend in the comments below! P.S.: tons of sales are still going on today, in case you didn't do enough damage over the weekend. VIDEOS: The Craziest Black Friday Brawls From The Weekend

Black Friday was as nuts as ever, with people wreaking havoc over TVs and Barbie Dolls across the country and in the UK. A lot of the brawls took place at Walmart, but the retailer wasn’t the only culprit. Fighting also went down at Target, Kohl’s, and Tesco (basically the Target of the UK). Some retailers opened their stores on Thanksgiving day—in other words, fights were in full swing by Thursday evening. CBS reported a fight that broke out at a Norwalk Walmart on Thursday night, where two women were arguing over a Barbie Doll. Allegedly one of the women threw a punch, so the cops were called in but nobody was arrested or seriously hurt. Those women may have gotten away with no arrest, but not everyone that acted like a maniac got away with it. Three women were arrested at a Kohl's in Tustin after being involved in a vicious fight that left two victims with gashes on their faces. Another arrest was made at an Indianapolis mall, where a man and his girlfriend started punching an off-duty cop after they were asked to leave for being too rowdy. Much to our dismay, none of the incidents we just mentioned were caught on film, but we did find plenty other footage that illustrates this year's Black Friday chaos, and my oh my is it good. Let us begin with a clip that shows what happened at a mall in Atlanta: The bad behavior continued at Target, when someone tried to steal this woman's TV: The message you should take away from that is never to get between a shopper and her door-buster TV deal—it's a major no no. Meanwhile, back at Black Friday Mecca—aka Walmart—things got pretty heated. The following footage shows what happened inside a Walmart in Michigan City. Keep your eyes peeled for the couple in the Chicago Bears jerseys: Vicious, but that's not all. Here's another example of people going insane over TVs at Walmart (pardon the fingertip): But then this happened when a guy got caught being too aggressive: Yep, that was a dude getting tasered in the chest. It happened at a Walmart. Moving on to the UK—yes, they have Black Friday too, and after the footage we've seen, it's way more intense then it is in The States. First, let's take a look at a video that was taken at Tesco: Brits, they're just like us—except they seem to get a bit more excited over deals on Vacuums: They also win for having the angriest Black Friday shopper this year: Imagine being in the same room as that guy? Bottom line, shopping stores on Black Friday is like entering a warzone—it’s intense and even dangerous (you saw the footage). So if you prefer to be safe and not have your head ripped off, consider the alternative—online shopping. After-all, nothing beats the comfort of your own home.

The Hottest Items Of Black Friday 2014 Were The Same As Black Friday 2013

The list of Black Friday 2014 bestsellers looks pretty much the same as 2013, which actually shouldn't be all that surprising. Last year, there were tons of brand new tech products like the iPad Air and Xbox One. These must-haves were only minimally improved this year, with no totally new versions hitting the market (ex: the iPad Air just got slightly thinner for the iPad Air 2). InfoScout reports that shoppers are still buying the same items this holiday season, but at reduced prices. Retailers can't charge they same amount for one year (or older) products. Stores like Target, Walmart and Best Buy will have to sell many more units than last year to keep up with previous holiday season sales. Click the slideshow to see what "won" Black Friday 2014. Shocker: consumer electronics dominated the list once again. Get what you want now while the prices are lower than ever. Piperlime's Black Friday Sale just went live and it's really good this year: get 25% off sitewide with code IHEARTNY. Net-A-Porter’s Huge Semi-Annual Sale Is Live! And Literally Crashing The Site.

Net-A-Porter's epic semi-annual sale always goes live the week of Black Friday and always costs me at least $500 each year. Two years ago I bought a Pucci bikini and a Missoni scarf (that I wear literally every day in the winter, mind you) and last year I bought a fabulous cashmere sweater that has also gotten a lot play. As far as designer sales go, it doesn't get better than this. They've got Isabel Marant, Burberry, Missoni, Gucci, Lanvin, Chloe, Jimmy Choo, and more. It's so good, that they're experiencing some technical difficulties on the site. Just be patient--the pages will load, and they are worth it. TIP: Can't get to the sale from the homepage? Search for a designer you like or the item you're looking for and the results will show up with the sale prices! SHOP NET-A-PORTER'S ANNUAL SALE Editor's picks: BURBERRY PRORSUM Cashmere-jacquard scarf ($525, down from $875), APIECE APART striped woven alpaca-blend poncho ($294, down from $420), Delphine Delafon quilted leather shoulder bag ($245, down from $490), NIKE Zoom Structure 17 mesh sneakers ($80.50, down $115), MARKUS LUPFER Bonjour Au Revoir sequined merino wool sweater ($259, down from $370).

Pearl stud earrings for $48 (down from $115)? You shouldn't even still be here--the deals are over at Amazon! SHOP AMAZON'S PRE BLACK FRIDAY DEALS NOW! Where To Buy An iPad On Black Friday: We Compared All The Deals

Who doesn't have an iPad on their holiday wish-list? Even if you already have one, getting a newer one is always nice, especially if you can nab a great deal. We scoured all the flyers out there to find the best place to buy an iPad on Black Friday. So far, we've found Black Friday deals on iPads at Target, Best Buy, Staples, and Walmart, but we'll be sure to update the list as more Black Friday flyers are released. Target's deals are only good if you're looking to earn a Target gift card, because they won't be reducing prices. They're offering a $100 gift card with the purchase of a 16GB iPad Air ($399), iPad mini 2 ($299), and iPad mini 3 ($399). Target shoppers who plan to get a 16GB iPad Air 2 ($499) will get a $140 gift card, but purchasing a regular iPad mini ($249) will only gain you an $80 gift card. The Black Friday deal on iPads at Walmart is slightly better because they'll be discounting the 16GB iPad mini to $199 ($40 off) and offering a $30 Walmart gift card to go with it. They won't, however, be discounting the $397 16GB iPad Air, but anyone who buys it on Black Friday will get a $100 Walmart gift card. If you're looking to get the 16GB iPad Air, definitely go to Staples—they'll be offering it for $319 ($80 off). Staples is also going to be offering the iPad mini 2 for $239 ($60 off), and the iPad with retina display for $279 ($70 off). Best Buy is the place to go for the iPad mini 3—they'll be selling it for $324.99 ($74 off), and they'll also be taking $100 off all iPad 2's on Black Friday. If you're looking for the lowest Black Friday prices on iPads, hit Walmart for the iPad mini or Staples for the iPad mini 2, but if you're looking to get the newest iPad, it's totally worth it to go to Best Buy. To see all these iPad deals, click through the slideshow. Just be sure to get on the deals the moment they're released because some, if not all, of these stores will begin their Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving Day.

What To Buy On Black Friday—And Every Other Sale Day Of The Season

Gone are the days when the Friday after Thanksgiving was the only time to score great deals—Black Friday has morphed into a full on season. Now retailers are offering huge discounts as early as the day after Halloween, on Thanksgiving Day (way to kill the holiday essence) and right up to Christmas Eve. They even extended Cyber Monday to an entire Cyber Week. And while it's great that there are literally months of markdowns now, and you don't have to buy all the gifts on your list on the actual Black Friday, it's sometimes hard to know whether you should buy a product now or wait for the prices to drop further. Certain products still tend to go on sale on Black Friday (appliances, iPhones, headphones), but retailers are no longer waiting until Black Friday to offer doorbuster deals (you'll have to skip the turkey for things like TVs and tablets--those deals are best on Thanksgiving Day). Knowing when to buy what is where we come in. With some help from DealNews and SHEfinds' own online shopping expert and CEO Michelle Madhok, we have broken down specific purchases (iPhones, iPads, Zoomer Boomer Dino, Kindle 6) as well as larger categories (home, tech, toys) by the best day or time to buy them (now vs. Thanksgiving vs. Black Friday vs. later in the season). We even took in to consideration when some of the super popular products are likely to sell out so you don't wait TOO long for the deal and miss out entirely. Behold:

Black Friday 2004 Was The Same As Black Friday 2013: Everyone Wanted UGGs

It's no surprise that the iPad sold out on Black Friday, or that tech products were the number one sellers, but we were a little shocked to hear what fashion item people searched the most for online: UGGs. Yes, it's true. People still love the sheepskin boots no matter how much crap they get for wearing them. According to Google's research which was shared with the Huffington Post, UGG boots were #4 on the complete list of trending items on Black Friday, following video game consoles, tablets, and Minecraft Legos. The only other fashion items that made the top 10 were North Face and Nike Air Jordan retro sneakers. Based on that list, we can pretty much assume that UGGs will be around for a long, long time. You better find a way to put your aversion aside. Don't forget to check out 100+ Cyber Monday deals, the Kindle Fire sale, and celebrity Thanksgiving Instagrams

Kate Spade Extended Its Up-To-75%-Off Surprise Sale!

And The Hottest Item Of Black Friday Was…

According to InfoScout, the hottest item of Black Friday was the iPad Air 16GB ($499), which we totally predicted since it's on our Going, Going, Gone Guide! The company interviewed the first 3,000 shoppers at Target on Thanksgiving and Friday and found that the top 3 items were all iPads, and the top 30 items sold were all consumer electronic devices. Guess those really are the best kind of gifts for anyone on your shopping list. So now that you know the iPad Air "won" Black Friday, click the slideshow to see the top 10 best selling products from the craziest shopping day of the year. And get them before they sell out (if they're even still available)! Black Friday Horror Stories–Aka, Why You Should Shop Online This Year

People go kind of nuts on Black Friday. The sales, the early hours, the "holiday spirit," if you will, all make people do some pretty absurd things just to get that flat screen TV for 40% off or that Xbox game their kids want so badly. It's like Jingle All The Way--but WAY worse. You could say that, sure, everyone is just trying to be the best Santa they can be. After all, Santa himself wouldn't stop at anything to get those on the Nice List what they want. But between shopping cart heists, incidents of pepper spray and mace, stabbings and shootings over flat screen TVs and toys at Toys R Us, actually participating in Black Friday could seriously spell the end of your holiday not the beginning. We're not saying don't get out there and get the deals. We're more saying, do it online. You know, from the comfort and safety of your own home, where all you'll have to worry about is a bad server or Internet connection. Really, guys. People have died.

How To Kill It On Black Friday If You’re Shopping For Yourself

You might think Black Friday is the time to get all your holiday shopping over with, but it's an even better time to go shopping for yourself. Don't believe me? Well, it's been proven that Black Friday is a selfish holiday, and I'm not just making this up as an excuse for myself to finally get that iPhone 5S. In a recent DealNews survey, 44% of respondents said they'd mostly be shopping for themselves on Black Friday. "Selfish" here isn't necessarily a bad thing, in fact, it probably makes more sense than you think (and one of the few times it's OKAY to put yourself before others--especially during the holidays). I mean with 100+ amazing Black Friday sales, stores are practically begging us to do some retail therapy. Everyone has that one friend who makes holiday shopping all about her. She makes a list of everything she needs to get her family and friends, gets sidetracked by "lowest prices of the season" and then blows all her money on things for herself. We're not saying you should do exactly that, but can you really blame her for buying what she wants when the best deals of the year are going on? If you saw the one handbag you've wanted since last Christmas was 50% off, why wouldn't you buy it right then and there? You can count on family to be there for you no matter what, but sometimes, the only person you can trust to buy the gift you ACTUALLY want is yourself (#sadbuttrue). So, if you're someone who plans to do some selfish shopping 5 days from now, click the slideshow to see our tips for how to kill it on Black Friday. We show you how to save money and shop smart, so you get everything YOU want and also have money to spend on others. See, being selfish this time of year IS a good thing because now we have more money to buy our friends and family nice gifts. What Actually Sold On Black Friday: A Guide To The Year’s Bestsellers

As you can tell from our ongoing (and incessant) coverage of Black Friday, it's kind of a big day. Wait, scratch that - it's not just a day anymore, it's an entire season. Every retailer on the planet gears up by slashing prices, flooding your inbox with sale reminders, and switching up discount codes and percents off every day from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday. It's a whirlwind. But when the dust settles, and sales projections become reality, we can really determine what the hottest gifts of the season are. We conducted our own research in to what our readers bought through this site, as well as some industry reports - including this one from WWD, which cited tech items like smart phones, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, as well as apparel and accessories like Rampage boots, cashmere sweaters, and Nike Air Max as taking the lead this record-breaking sales year. We compiled the bestselling gifts in our slideshow above - click through to find out if items from your wish list or gift lists are on it. Quantities for some may be limited, so act fast. 10 No-Fail Tips To Conquer Black Friday Sales (Without Leaving The House)

We all know that Black Friday is no time to casually stroll through the nearest Best Buy, Target or your nearest mall, but even the most seasoned shoppers can feel a little they entered a war zone complete with line cutters, pepper sprayers, and elbow-throwers. And in recent years, Black Friday is now preceded by, well, Thanksgiving shoppers looking to get their paws on "doorbuster" deals just minutes after fueling up on turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy. If you're anything like us, you're not willing to risk broken bones and black eyes for this year's must-have gadget, so instead of venturing out into the unknown, grab the leftovers out of the fridge and get comfy in front of your computer -- some of the best deals are hiding in plain site (ha!). 1. Go big or don’t bother: 75% off a brand new LED TV is worth way more than 75% off a wallet. Don’t waste your time on the small stuff that’ll go on sale later anyway. 2. Make a list: Sometimes the online deals are too great to pass up, but you're not saving any money if you end up buying things you don't need. Have a tangible list nearby so you're not constantly swapping screens -- and stick to it. 3. Ditch the family: Most of retailers debut their sales on Thanksgiving now, so while everyone else is basting the turkey, grab your laptop and spend quality time with all the best online deals. There'll be leftovers, right? 4. Rid yourself of distractions: There will be lots pop-ups trying to catch your attention, so research specialty sites that report on all the Black Friday deals first, like blackfriday.com and bfads.net, and make your game plan from there. This way, you won't be tempted to click through on something that offers a free iPhone5. Sign up for the SHEfinds newsletter–we’ll send out a summary of sales at midnight that day. 5. Beat everyone to it: If you haven't already downloaded, Google Chrome (the fastest browser by a long shot), get on it! When shopping sales, hit “view all,” scroll all the way down and start shopping at the bottom up. You’ll be more likely to get the stuff people haven’t seen yet–it's like shopping from the back of the store! 6. Coupons are cool again: Shamelessly use as many coupons as you can find–that’s the best part of no checkout line. For promotional codes, head to RetailMeNot.com or Google the name of the shopping site with the words “coupon code” or “promo code.” You can start doing this on Thanksgiving, as some of them post early. 7. Speed Up Check Out: Pretty much every site lets you store your your credit card info and shipping address(es) securely to speed up checkout. If your browser doesn’t offer the option to save this info, use tools like roboform. 8. Triple check your game plan: Your quick pre-purchase checklist: will it ship before Christmas? Is it returnable? Is the shipping cost reasonable? (Sometimes it’s as much as you ‘saved’ during the sale–might be worth it to head to the store instead.) 9. While you're at it, make some money, too: You’re spending enough this year, so may as well make some money, too. Bank of America’s Add It Up or Ebates.com allow you to earn up to 20% cash back on online purchases on top of retailer discounts. #win 10. Our super sneaky tip: Fill your cart the night before with items you're pining for, and when you wake up at the crack of dawn, get the discount! We did this a couple years in a row and saved ourselves a ton of time and heartbreak. Another great idea is add your wishlist on Shopstyle, choose “sale alert” and get emails when the prices drop. Check out ALL of our favorite sales and deals (there are TONS!) plus the best coats, leather jackets, gloves and hats for the season, too.
